I noticed today that construction fencing is being installed at North and Clark, outside the old pancake house and Village Theater. Does anyone know the status of this project otherwise?

I recently saw a magazine ad (in CS, maybe?) for the 101 North project. I assume it's full speed ahead.

Stopped in to see the Apple Store today. Very cool space but was surprised to see a crack in one of the glass panels. An associate said it cracked last night due to the cold. Looks like it's only one layer of four (?) laminated pieces that cracked. Will be interesting to see how they repair this.

You may have to zoom on the photos to see the cracks. They're only visible from an angle. Disappear almost entirely when viewed straight on.

Hmm, wonder if that was just a bad piece of glass. If not they might be replacing a lot of glass over the lifetime of this building, by Chicago standards it wasn't that cold this week.

So it looks like the Rock N' Roll McDonald's is getting demolished, not just renovated.

Great news. But unfortunately they're just replacing it right?

This is what the permit states:
"WRECK AND REMOVE A 2 STORY STEEL/MASONRY RESTAURANT AND ADJACENT PAVILION/TRASH ENCLOSURE. THE FIRST FLOOR OF THE SOUTH STRUCTURE (77 X 79) AND BASEMENT SHALL REMAIN"

There is another permit that's not issued yet:
"EXISTING RESTAURANT, OCCUPANCY C1-LARGE ASSEMBLY. RENOVATION AND NEW DINING ROOM ADDITION TO BE OCCUPANCY C1 - LARGE ASSEMBLY. NEW CANOPY WITH PV PANELS INSTALLATION AND FOUNDATION FOR CANOPY INCLUDING DEEP FOUNDATION NOT IN SCOPE - TO BE SUBMITTED UNDER"

So it looks like they're completely knocking down the big portion and will be constructing something else in its place. Oh and there's another permit still not issued for parking lot improvements. So my guess is that we'll see this unfortunate POS here with the parking lot for a handful of more years at a minimum.

Seems like it would more likely be improper installation. I would think that glass on its own wouldn't crack like that, but if anchored incorrectly it could happen.

Wow, thats quite an extreme 'remodel'. Anyone know what the final design is going to look like? It's probably too much to hope for that they will build out the entire site to the sidewalk and remove the drive-thru aspect, right?

That would be cool - who knows. Depends on how much money they take in every year, how much they plan to spend for this, etc. This will be a multi million dollar renovation. Just hoping there's some kind of end game here - like spending $2M to increase the property values by $8M type of thing.
