Interesting to see a pre-fab concrete structure. Is there a reason we don't see that more often?

Wednesday night, the Evanston Plan Commission voted 7-0 against a 33-story apartment tower proposed for 601 Davis Street. According to a report from Evanston Now, the commissioners deemed the building to be too tall and the on-site parking insufficient. The final version of the plan had specified 318 dwelling units, 176 parking spaces, and about 7,500 square feet of retail space.

Slated to replace a drive-through bank and long-vacant lot, the downtown development also included a provision to preserve the nearby historic University Building at the corner of Davis and Chicago Avenue. The glassy project comes from Vermillion Development and Chicago design architect Solomon Cordwell Buenz.

Despite the unanimous thumbs down, yesterday’s decision doesn’t necessarily mean the project is completely done for. The vote from the Evanston Plan Commission basically amounts to a recommendation for the Evanston City Council to later consider—or potentially ignore. The 601 Davis Street plan is expected to go before the Council for a final vote in early 2018.

Do they want to be what Milwaukee is to Chicago, an hour closer? Or do they want to be Arlington Heights? Don't shoot yourself in the foot, NIMBYs.

Not sure if this belongs here, but I searched for an Evanston thread and didn't find one.

evanston's city council is decidedly more NIMBY-friendly these days than it was a decade ago.

i'll be quite surprised if we ever see a building over 300' tall approved in evanston anytime in the near term future.

Twelve-story high-rise development proposed for suburban Skokie
The mixed-use development calls for new commercial space topped by 153 rental units

This hasn't been mentioned yet. Half mile from the Yellow line, so it's TOD.
Lucien Lagrange though, typical early '00s suburban.

Parkview Apartments, Arlington Heights

All topped out. Glad this one finally happened, That lot has been vacant for at least a decade while being only one block from the Metra station.

the architecture is certainly suspect (beware a VE hatchet job), but that vacant corner lot DESPERATELY needs some substantial and urban to hold it, and this project will fit that particular bill very nicely.

We'll see if it stays 12 stories or gets cut in half to 6 stories. One would think merchants in the area would like to prospect of more residents within walking distance, but as is almost always the case, there will be a vocal group complaining about increased density/traffic/parking...

^ I looked across the street from his home on Google Streetview. The day care center is not even visible or a hindrance on his property. It's hidden by landscaping and his area looks no different than any other neighborhood. Either something else is going on or the guy was a true nutcase.

Aldermen reject 601 Davis tower
By Bill Smith on January 23, 2018 - 6:12am

Evanston aldermen resoundingly rejected plans for a 33-story residential tower at 601 Davis St., Monday night refusing to even advance it from committee for a full City Council debate.

Despite a last-minute offer from Vermilion Development President Dave Cocagne to consider modifying the proposal, aldermen on the Planning and Development Committee declared that it was so out of scope from what they might approve that any new version of the project would have to start the planned development review process over from scratch.

Only Alderman Ann Rainey, 8th Ward, suggested a milder response -- tabling the plan for a few months to give Vemilion time to make substantial revisions to it.

The committee vote to reject the plans out of hand was 6-1.

evanston's city council is now mostly constituted of height phobics.

the chances of a tower over 300' being approved by the current city council are nil.
