People associate the names with the buildings as icons of the city. People have an emotional attachment to names. You probably wouldn't rename your dog after it having the same name for 5 years. It's just an innate emotional response that the people who have known it as the John Hancock Center for decades don't want to immediately accept the name change of one of the world's most iconic buildings. Over time it will lose that strong name association and more people in the future will call it Hearn or whatever name they are going with.

It’s not about the companies. I’d be pissed if Wrigley Field or the Wrigley Building were renamed, regardless of how I feel about the Wrigley company. I really hope Tribune Tower isn’t renamed now that the Trib has left. Etc.

Totally agree - I actually hate Tribune (having worked for them) but the building is the Tribune building, it's history.

Oh god that one would really sting, worse than the demise of Marshall Field's. I still have a bunch of their hangers in my closet.

Exactly. I don't make a point of shopping at Sears very often, maybe an appliance or two and some tools over the years, but I'm not going to lie it makes me sad as hell that it looks like it may not make it out of this period of retail history.

Not to good too nerdy, but Sears is a great American company and with their catalog history probably could have positioned themselves to be a successful Amazon type operation in the e-commerce era, but totally failed to grab that opportunity. That being said, yeah it's shitty that they felt the need to move out to the I-90 sticks when they did but that's no reason to have some sort of adolescent angst towards referring to the Sears Tower as the Sears Tower. Anyways...

Another Alta coming to Chicago? Walsh has Alta Grand listed as one of their bidding opportunities on their website. It could very well be something else, but I don't think so... I wasn't able to find anymore info about it, they must the in the early stages of development.

Not so sure on Standard Oil/Aon... Thoughts on that one?

Aaron (Glowrock)
Thats interesting. Ive always called it Aon (probably because I wasn't alive when it was built)

But I have never referred to the Sears tower as anything else, Nor will I ever refer to the John Hancock as anything else. Or the IBM building for that matter. Maybe its something about black buildings

I'm guessing this is for Harrison and Wells. The last I saw this was not a very impressive development for the location sadly.

Tribune says Carson's at Wells/Ontario is closing Monday, moving to River East.

Hopefully the structure and lot will be history not long after.

Great news! Hopefully apartment rises there and at Al's across the street. Next stop, the hooters corner down the street. Lets keep this canyon growing.

Yep, the tribune says it was sold to a developer that plans a high rise. Wasn’t there a design for that lot that was on here a year or so ago from a Milwaukee architect / developer?

i believe it was a proposal called "Blanc" designed by Milwaukee's Rinka Chung Architects.

i have no idea if this is still the active proposal for the site in question.

N. Wells St has had consistent high-rise construction for the past 3 years. It's hard not imagining this area become a new retail district

If that Milwaukee one is still on the table i'll take it. I love how that area is staying unique to each building. Not just cookie cutter blue glass all along there.
