Well, in ways that it already has. Weather and communications satellites. Remote sensing and crop monitoring. And soon, internet service in the third world and remote areas.

But colonization will never make the slightest dent in Earth's population. Asteroid mining will eventually be used in construction in space, but will never make economic sense for returning materials to Earth. And Helium-3 mining on the moon is largely economic science fiction. (If a market for it develops, we'll produce it cheaper on Earth.)

On the other hand...

...None of that money gets spent in space. Every penny is spent here on Earth. Redistributed.

As for climate change, it's worth mentioning that the guy "spending billions of dollars racing space rockets to Mars" is the same guy who kick-started the electric car industry. And who is kick-starting the electric long-haul trucking industry. And who is now revolutionizing the solar power industry with his solar shingle replacements and storage batteries. Turning solar from something one in every 10,000 homeowners has to something most will have.

Now if the war machine to the south of us that keeps flooding the world with arms would just stop, then we'll be okay.

Remember that $3 million settlement from 2011 for investor victims of Rathore and Petrozza's previous enterprise? (Phoenix Credit Risk Management and Phoenix Capital Resources Inc.) Apparently they've paid it, and notices went up in the papers this week notifying investors that they may be eligible for compensation.

I assume there's a firewall between investments in Fortress/BDMC/etc. and that settlement.

I live in the Maritimes, I have engaged a lawyer from Ontario involved in 4 previous class action lawsuits against fortress. I am not paying any fees at this point he is just interested to know if there are other syndicated mortgage investors involved with any of the fortress projects. If you live in the Maritimes and are one of these investors looking for help feel free to contact me at Cullyman15@gmail.com

Just a few hours left in the latest deadline for Fortress to demolish the St. Regis. You might want to avoid walking down that side of Smith Street, in case they surprise us.

If the Jets lose tonight's game, put a big Predators banner on the building. Leave some sledge hammers laying around.

Given that it's between the arena and Portage & Main, do the same even if the Jets win.

BTW, is one of the "Smilies" in the message editor there just for this sort of situation?

Interestingly enough.. On my lunch walk yesterday, I noticed a construction company (can't remember the name, but it was only a couple people...) on site, doing whatever it was they were doing.

Possibly Whiteout Party related.

He's probably right – that's where they got all the extra capacity from for the last two parties.

Wow, despite the recent oil downturn of the past couple of years, there are 15 condo construction sites in downtown Calgary! Why can't even half of this much activity happen in downtown Winnipeg?

Well when you consider D Condo, Glass House, a number of spots in the exchange, maybe part of sutton place. We are seeing some investment in our downtown in terms of condos. Don't forget the apartments going up in our downtown as well with TNS, 300 Main and 185 smith should be considered here. Just because we don't have the same number of buildings going up doesn't mean we are growing. They have at least 500,000 more people to support and would have a greater number of projects moving forward.

It's amazing what oil has done for Alberta over the last number of decades. It's hard to believe that Winnipeg was actually larger than both Calgary and Edmonton at one time. It's rather sad that we have little in comparison by way of natural resources here in Manitoba to spur on the same level of economic growth in our province to rival that of Alberta (or even Saskatchewan for that matter).

Or have we just never had a provincial government willing to explore/exploit these natural resources here? There have been numerous scientific reports that there is a ton of oil and gold in Manitoba as well, especially in the SW MB, but no one has really ever done anything about it. Do you think that all the oil flowing out of North Dakota stops at the border? Or that this giant rectangle call Saskatchewan is the only place where potash is found?

You would think a Tory provincial government would want to take advantage of our natural resources much like in Saskatchewan and try and make us less reliant on transfer payments. Seems the last 35-40 everything has been thrown in the Hydro basket and not much else. Manitoba should be a much larger transport hub for trucking and rail and have more mining, ranching and oil/potash growth.

Part of making that happen though means the government spending money on/subsidizing exploration efforts. The government of SK was the one that paid for the exploratory efforts behind the potash boom IIRC.

My understanding is that the Alberta government has collected surprisingly little money from the oil boom. But in return it's put little money into the infrastructure to support it.

The oil companies complained that there's very infrastructure to support the large numbers of people they've moved into northern oil boom towns. Alberta responded with "Correct. It's up to you to build it."

The Manitoba government on the other hand loves big infrastructure projects. The floodways and their upgrades, hydro lines, northern highways, etc.

Forget Calgary, there is more happening in Hamilton, (maybe London???) and Halifax too. Hopefully we will see more projects in the very near future.
