-I feel like it would be a bit better if the games were, say 50-15-15 or something. That might even be enough for another city!

-I think that Canada could have pulled off a world cup on its own with difficulty, but now with the expansion to 48 teams it has become unrealistic.

-Ottawa's biggest hurdle would be transportation. There's a glaring lack of inner city mass transit, with the city fetting more and more suburban extensions of their one tram instead of solving this problem. They've got a decent stop-gap solution that works for Redblacks games, but the WC would probably require at least some canal boats on top of this if not something more substantial (rail).

Which could be kinda cool if you think about it.

Have they decided which cities will host the opening game and the final Cup game itself?

Not sure about the opener but the final will be at the Giants-Jets stadium in NJ.

Final is at MetLife in New York. Home of the Giants/jets.

Mexico City and LA (Rose Bowl) are rumoured for the opening games along with one of the Canadian cities. MetLife in NY/NJ hosts the final, Atlanta and Dallas get the SF games IIRC.

In the proposed schedule, CAN1 gets four matches (the last being a Round of 16 match), with CAN2 and CAN3 getting three matches (one each in the Round of 32).[Source]

Under this scenario, if Canada receives auto-qualification and are seeded as A1, they would play at CAN1 and CAN3, followed by a potential knockout round game at CAN2 with a further potential game at CAN1 if they win that.

Thanks for the link. Informative.

Seeing as Canada has only qualified for the WC once ever, does Canada still need to qualify for this one, or seeing as Canada is a host, they get an automatic entry?

Canada's automatic qualification still needs to be voted on by FIFA. They're not guaranteed automatic entry yet.

Given the quality of talent coming through the system Canada should be able to qualify for a larger 48-team field in 2026. Without the US and Mexico in CONCACAF qualifying there would only be a handful of teams potentially better than them with three qualifying spots available. By 2026 the quality of Canada's team should be better, if we have to qualify on our own merit.

I'm a huge soccer fan and am excited by today's news, but lets cut the bullshit and agree that this is an American World Cup hosting party with a couple tag along friends.

When the number of host cities is trimmed and we potentially lose another city then that will be a huge insult. Toronto, Montreal and Edmonton would/will do a fantastic job of hosting whatever they get and to cut one of them out would be a real loss.

I sure hope Edmonton isn’t cut... I feel like this city will be buzzing and fully supportive - what a summer party it’d be!

Completely agree. Edmonton would do an amazing job (along with Toronto and Montreal).

It was cool to see Alphonso Davies (a Canadian teenage soccer star currently playing for the Whitecaps) mention that he hopes to one day play for team Canada in his hometown of Edmonton while giving a presentation in front of FIFA delegates in Moscow right before they voted.

This is akin to bobbing up to grab swag being thrown into the crowd at a sporting game. I couldn't think of anything more demeaning. It's a GIANT NO THANK YOU from me.
You're not into soccer, that's the bottom line, we get it. The rest is B.S.

We don't need the cost of a sole bid, were getting in on the world stage on the cheap. 2022 will likely be the last sole bid. Future world cups will be multinational affairs, it's simply too big now for anyone except maybe 5 or 6 countries to host alone.

This will be a fantastic party and will take soccer in North America to another level, the way the last North American world cup stimulated the creation of MLS. The Canadian Premier League should be mature by then and all of Canada will get into the excitement and development of grassroots support.

Where can we find the full list?

But no amount of work is going to to turn BMO into a stadium that's in the class of Commonwealth, BC Place, a reno'd Big O, or even IGF or Mosaic...
Nonsense.

What are the odds of Edmonton building a 5* hotel(s) and have it be ready and open for the World Cup? Can that city and tourism/economic market sustain such a hotel(s) going forward into the future? There are only a handful across Canada, most of which are in Vancouver and Toronto (Montreal only has a couple of true 5*).

Also Canada is not going to be a sole host this century. For the guy saying he'd never watch a WC if Canada doesn't host it as if it was a slap in the face...
Argentina hasn't hosted in 40 years
England hasn't hosted in 52 years
Uruguay hasn't hosted in 88 years
Storied teams like Belgium, Portugal and the Netherlands have never hosted.

These are top twenty teams in the world, top ten in some years. Canada is ranked #79, which means there are at least 60 teams more credible than ours on the international stage. Qatar is a massive outlier and is embroiled in all sorts of bribery and scandal (and should really be cancelled for the image of the game and organization, but w/e).

Isn't the JW Mariott going to be a 5* hotel once completed?

The Official United 2026 Bid Book pdf has 530 pages of information regarding the bid.

FIFA counts 3*, 4*, and 5* hotels.
