I mapped the rail line in question:

The article mentioned that, after this purchase, there would only be about 4 more miles left to acquire in order to complete the entire 22-mile corridor. That's awesome! So close!

Would them owning the entire loop speed up the construction process?

I don't think so. Money to fund construction is a big constraint, and they need time to plan and engineer the trail and right of way. Planning the entire 22 mile loop at once would have likely been overwhelming and not cost efficient in my opinion. Doing it in an incremental fashion has allowed them to learn from mistakes and also plan development a little better in my opinion. They also need to coordinate with MARTA on the light rail portion, which is likely another challenge.

Ownership definitely takes some surprises out of the budgeting. Having the Trust for Public Land folks acquire some key pieces early on really helped during the improving market before the Beltline or CoA had funding lined up.

I'm trying to imagine where the 4 missing miles are: must be between Tanyard and Lindbergh?

Yes, that is the active rail line. They will likely have to do a street trail on that stretch along most of the route

I think the current plan is to follow Peachtree Creek for this segment.

i've always thought it would be really cool to reopen the red portion as an elevated 'high line' (since that's what it is already), and have it lead into a bridge that goes on top of the GWCC. they could re-do the roof into something in between a park and the roof at PCM.

i checked the GIS map. it looks like the blue portion of the line was owned by CSX and seaboard coast line RR, except for the portion that goes north into knight park. i think that's owned by the two companies located there.

the elevated red line is owned by a few companies, one is north avenue development LLC, which has the same mailing address as the emerald corridor foundation (developing trails around proctor creek). they own the red part north of hollowell/bankhead. the other is the bethursday development corporation which has the same mailing address as antioch baptist church. they own the entire rail corridor, save two lots, all the way down to (and including the apartment building on western avenue) bethune elementary school. south of which the old rail line is gone, but would have continued where the school and the GWCC is now.

maybe both the church and the emerald corridor foundation might be willing to work with the beltline to make this happen?

the only problems are the gaps in the line. unfortunately, between the CSX portion (in blue) and the emerald corridor portion (in red), there's a single lot separating the two portions of rail owned by German One LP. in addition, there's a small portion south of western avenue owned by Do @ King Plow Arts Center LLC, and a single home at 518 walnut street which is probably not really in the way but is worth mentioning because part of the back yard may be.

Two-mile Westside segment added to Atlanta Beltline

https://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/...o-atlanta.html
Quote:
The city of Atlanta and Atlanta BeltLine Inc. have acquired 1.8 miles of inactive railroad corridor on the Westside for $6.3 million.

The so-called "Kudzu Line" will provide access from the Beltline to the Bankhead MARTA station, Maddox Park, the planned Westside Park at Bellwood Quarry and a future link to the newly opened Proctor Creek Greenway.
Quote:
During the next six months, freight rail line CSX Corp. will remove the rails. The public is prohibited from using the corridor until Beltline officials determine it's safe.
So it looks like this has been finalized.

Even better that the Brock built development is essentially on the eastern cusp of this new acquisition (& Texiera's proposal a little to the west). It's crazy what's essentially being proposed is nearly the equivalent or more than what exists in Inman Park.

Atlanta BeltLine seeking $16 million grant for Southside Trail

https://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/...-about-16.html

Quote:
Atlanta BeltLine Inc. is optimistic about its chances to land a $16 million federal grant that could jump start construction of the Southside Trail.

The BeltLine applied for the grant through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s new $1.5 billion BUILD program (formerly the TIGER grant). About 100 grants will be awarded out of 800 applicants, the BeltLine said in a statement to Atlanta Business Chronicle on Wednesday.

The grant would immediately boost efforts to build an estimated $70 million Southside Trail.

“We have identified potential funding sources for a proposed $54 million local match,” the BeltLine told Atlanta Business Chronicle on Wednesday. “If we are awarded the BUILD Grant, we will have about 18 months to verify that we’ve secured the local match funding.”

Grant notification should happen by Dec. 18, 2018.

A city cursed by sprawl: can the BeltLine save Atlanta?

As part of a week long series on Atlanta, The Guardian delves into the story of The Beltline.

With 2.5 million people moving to metro Atlanta over the next 20 years, an ambitious project to repurpose a 22-mile loop of old freight lines into walking, cycling and light rail offers the city an alternative future – if they can get it right

BeltLine put up the Murphy Crossing property (20 acres) for sale:

Associated Documents:

Previous study results:

I'm really hoping the BeltLine buys and builds out the spur to the southw of Murphy Crossing (from Allen Ave & Avon Ave intersection, westbound to Sylvan Rd, then southwest to Dill Ave & Murphy Ave. It could link directly to Oakland City station and would allow Campbellton Rd LRT to estend directly into the SE trail. It's currently owned by Atlanta and West Point Railroad.
