They will need 3 arenas for men's and women's hockey and short track speed skating and figure skating.

Two arenas for men's and women's hockey - use Corral and presumably a new 18,000 seat arena

Short track speed skating and figure skating - Scotiabank Arena

Gatineau's new arena complexe now under construction. Slated to open in 2020. The complexe feature a 4,500 seat main arena and three community ice rinks and an above ground parking structure to serve not only the arena with the mini-downtown district of La Cité, which includes the city's main library, a performance hall, a sports complexe, a Cegep and a mid-rise Federal office building. The area is also served by La Cité RapiBus station.

Since we're now talking about new second tier multiple ice surface sports complexes, I'll mention this one:

This is the Centre Uni Centre, a soon-to-be-constructed "intergenerational community complex" which will be built in the Moncton suburb of Dieppe. The complex will cost about $32M and will include "an indoor walking track, a community kitchen, an intergenerational greenhouse, community rooms which can accommodate up to 150 people for various events and activities such a dance classes, a primary ice surface with 1,104 seats, and a secondary ice surface with 324 seats."

Uni is the Acadian credit union in New Brunswick. They paid $1M for the naming rights.

I believe the feds and the province kicked in about $20M for the complex. One of the selling point was that Moncton will be hosting the Jeux de la Francophonie (the French version of the Commonwealth Games) in 2021, and additional secondary athletic facilities were necessary in the metro area.

Looks like Dieppe is building another 2plex instead of going for a 4plex. Good to see past lessons haven't been learned.

I'm hopeful for the new Gatineau arena. It will be a massive upgrade over RGC and seems like a definite step up on Branchaud-Briere in both location and quality. Should be exciting to see when it opens.

NB municipalities should have figured out the problem with building 2-plexes instead of 4-plexes 10 years ago when Freddy was waking up to the realization that the separate Willie O'Ree Place and Grant-Harvey Centre were going to be a problem. Ask pretty much anyone who's involved with minor hockey in the city and they almost unanimously agree it should have been a 4-plex at the exhibition grounds with a 5000-seat main arena for UNB and/or a QMJHL team.

Moncton already has a 4-plex arena (the Superior Propane Centre). It in fact was the first 4-plex in Atlantic Canada. The trouble for Dieppe is that there is already a 2-plex in the city (the Arthur-J-LeBlanc Centre), and this is relatively new. It wouldn't make much sense for them to decommission the Arthur-J-LeBlanc to combine all their ice surfaces into a single 4-plex.

Moncton's other large suburb (Riverview) is in a similar situation. They have an existing 2-plex (the Dobson Arena Complex), and are in the preliminary stages of exploring the possibility of a new arena complex to supplement the Dobson. It will likely end up being a second 2-plex as well.

I agree with you though. Fredericton (at the time) should have followed Moncton's lead and built a single 4-plex to service the entire city. Instead, they let politics get in the way and built two arena complexes instead, one on either side of the river........

Q already has too many teams as it is. A relocation would make more sense. For as long as they exist Shawinigan is going to be a barrier to T-R.

I found it a little odd that a city of T-R's size didn't have a more sizable rink than the Colisée. As charming as it is, it's basically a depression-era barn suited to Jr. A hockey in a city of 10,000, not one that's well over 100,000.

Indeed. TR is absolutely large enough to have a very successful Q-League team.

The league currently has 18 teams in three divisions.

There are other cities that could easily justify a team, like Trois Rivieres, Fredericton and maybe a south shore suburb of Montreal like Ste. Hyacinthe.

The arena in T-R actually seats just under 3000, so it's about the same size as the old Guertin in Gatineau (Hull), and might be larger than some of the other current LHJMQ rinks. Like most CHL rinks past or present that were not renovated or replaced, yeah it's kind of a barn.

T-R had a team in the LHJMQ for a fairly long time. They were called the Draveurs. But they've been gone for at least 20 years. Maybe 25.

The void was filled by a number of other teams, including semi-pro, though mostly it was the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières Patriotes - which was a powerhouse in men's hockey for several decades. They had an LHJMQ-style following in T-R, something which AFAIK has never existed elsewhere in Quebec or even in Canada for a university hockey team.

For a fairly long time (about 20 years or so), the LHJMQ had no teams in Sherbrooke and Trois-Rivières, which are among the largest cities in Quebec. In Sherbrooke the void was filled by semi-pro and also AHL affiliates of NHL clubs.

Sherbrooke returned to major junior hockey about 5 years ago IIRC.
