Actually, I find the variable speed limit signs with their lit digital displays easier to read than the painted ones, particularly in poor visibility.

They are. Next time you go over the Coq summit there's a pole with an array of optical, laser and temperature sensors. There's likely more in the road and the setup is repeated on other poles up and down the coridoor. Some of the other routes have them as well for reporting road conditions online but the system feeds back into the signage to adjust the speed limit for the observed conditions.
