That gaudy McDonald's sign hanging off the neoclassical building is a travesty rendered in steel.

That is the beauty of Times Square (being gaudy).

I understand that, but it pains me, as someone with a particular interest in classical architecture, to see such a beautiful facade tarnished with such cheesy crap. Put the gaudy modern adornments on gaudy modern structures, but not on such a beautiful old building.

It's almost required on that stretch of 42nd. Would you prefer the facade demolished and replaced with a modern look entirely?

That's nothing.

Almost? It IS required.

gttx, have you ever been to Times Square? (As was said before) That's why it's famous and legendary.

Great shot of an exciting place. I just wish they would get rid of those ugly New Jersey dividers. They look so cheap...

I'm not saying that it doesn't fit in the context of Times Square. I've been there many times, and I actually like the flashiness/gaudiness of the whole area. It's something totally unique in the world.

What I was lamenting was the defacing of a classical facade with a kitschy "modern" sign. It was an observation that was independent of location. In Times Square, it was certainly a necessity; it just came at the expense of a facade that I think is beautiful in and of itself. Just an observation, mostly because I wish my hometown (Atlanta) had more buildings like that. Sorry, I didn't mean to get anyone riled up about it.

There's a plan in the works for that. That's the worst thing ever done to Times Square.

I drove through there once and it was a nightmare. That was the first and last time I drove in Manhattan. Now I just stick to the transit.

Nothing has really changed. I'm more curious now about the lighting.

Yep. The same element done in iterations of Art Deco, Second Modernism, High-Tech and Deconstructivism, coexisting side-by-side. Quite interesting.
