The suburbs are appealing to people because they can move in and go through all phases of life (single, relationship, children, empty nest, elderly) and not have to feel like they need to move. This aging in place in urban areas is not viewed as very viable by most people and I think for good reason. An urban area can't and shouldn't try to compete with the suburbs in all facets, but they could learn a lot from them and the result would be a much more livable/enjoyable environment.
I would like to see SLC specifically start talking about this because we may be the region most in need of appealing to families in order to have a thriving and economically/politically influential city. I would like to see the creation of dozens of pocket parks or other small scale scattered through out downtown. I would love to see parks the size of Pioneer developed on the Holding and LDS church lots. More plazas and squares for community to gather. A complete network of protected bike lanes that cross the entire city. Lastly, if the city and developers can provide more realistic sized condos/apartments/townhomes at reachable prices for middle class families you will see a tsunami of families come into the city.
