I sound like a broken record, but something has to give. A massive development was just proposed in Herriman. It is a barometer of development trends and attitudes along the Wasatch Front. The proposal would add 33,000 people just north of Herriman. The proposal itself would reinforce what we already know: Cheap sprawl development is preferred by the developers. Yet citizens are outraged by the proposal because it will interrupt their bucolic living. Basically NIBYS saying no to high density housing. In a way they are right. High density belongs closer to an urban core. This has been a prevailing theme. It is all untenable. Something will break, and soon. Housing and cost of living prices continue to escalate, supply is low, NIMBYS saying no, developers wanting to do things on the cheap. Solution: Go dense and tall in true urban centers near mass transit. SLC needs to step up. Otherwise the livability and desirability of this place will be in the sewer.

You can use this map to see (in color) how racially segregated different areas are. West Valley City does seem to have a better mix than many other places on the Wasatch Front. This is based on the 2010 census though, I'm not sure what the data source is for the info. in the article posted above.

I guess we got rid of the University of Utah development thread, right?
I haven't seen any posts about the new proposed medical school. It's big and cool.

Didn't exactly get rid of it, but after all the U. of U. is in Salt Lake City and people should feel free to post all University updates on this SLC Thread.

Does anyone out there know when the groundbreaking is for any of the major projects that have been announced for 2018 will be such as Patrinley Group, Millinium Tower 370, 151 s state, or Regent Street hotel or are these just more "pipe dreams" that will never come true in
SAlt Lake like most all the other announcments?

Convention Hotel update

So, I sent an inquiry email about the convention hotel, and the status that I got was that DDRM was trying to secure financing. I really hope this pulls through, but I have my doubts after what we've seen with other projects.

I checked my date book and I had to take the wrapping off first. Mine was blank and apparently hasn't been used!

Thanks for reaching out. Would they be securing financing after a location was picked out and some plans drawn up or not necessarily? Try pressing them for any more details they may be able to give if you are up to it! Thanks for being proactive getting details. I feel like we are getting the silent treatment because of how quiet these pending projects have been so far this year

Good info found on Denver page

https://www.vox.com/2017/6/21/158155...amilies-cities

This article is about making a city livable for a family however I haven't finished reading it yet. This would be helpful to keep all the new, young, residents in downtown as they transition to family

What's more likely to happen?

The Jazz win a NBA title
BYU beats Utah in football
Salt Lake breaks ground on the CCH?

New? fire station in Sugarhouse

This article is from about a year ago, but I don't think it was ever posted. Anyone care to take shots of this building? Should be near completion.

Great article, thanks for posting! I definitely believe that if suburbs are going to be slowed down or reversed then appealing to families is a must. The suburbs are appealing to people because they can move in and go through all phases of life (single, relationship, children, empty nest, elderly) and not have to feel like they need to move. This aging in place in urban areas is not viewed as very viable by most people and I think for good reason. An urban area can't and shouldn't try to compete with the suburbs in all facets, but they could learn a lot from them and the result would be a much more livable/enjoyable environment.

I would like to see SLC specifically start talking about this because we may be the region most in need of appealing to families in order to have a thriving and economically/politically influential city. I would like to see the creation of dozens of pocket parks or other small scale scattered through out downtown. I would love to see parks the size of Pioneer developed on the Holding and LDS church lots. More plazas and squares for community to gather. A complete network of protected bike lanes that cross the entire city. Lastly, if the city and developers can provide more realistic sized condos/apartments/townhomes at reachable prices for middle class families you will see a tsunami of families come into the city.
