Thanks guys. In all the day to day craziness it's easy to lose sight of what really matters. Sometimes pictures capture that and help bring you back.

Agreed. Great perspective on life. I'm not a big softie in anyway but a young childs smile or infectious laughter always makes my day/brings a smile to my face.

A number of years ago our son joined a competitive level team in soccer. There were I think about 15 games and it was not automatic that you joined. Once the team was selected one kids parents took him to Australia for the summer etc and he missed about 9 or 10 games. Another kid missed 6 games due to vacation. Why sign up if you know your kid is going to miss so many games. Join house league etc where you're not taking up a spot on the official roster.

In both families the parents weren't engaged in watching the games/helping out.

In a lot of places I reckon they wouldn't even allow that. You'd get kicked off the team.

Depends how serious the team is, I guess. One of my son's besties went with his family to India for over a month in the early winter, and needless to say he missed all his hockey team's practices and games over that stretch. Maybe for 9 year olds that will fly, but probably not if you're 13.

My youngest kid is in Secondaire 1 (Grade 7) and is playing in volleyball tournaments like a pro.

When I was in grade 7, I was perfecting my clarinet.

Dad is proud.

Nothing wrong with being a band geek. Good for your boy!

After Grade 7, I graduated to Saxophone from Clarinet, where I remained for several years in the HS band.

Based on this masterpiece he made yesterday I think my eldest son takes after his dad:

Edit: this is from a drawing app on his Amazon Fire tablet where he can paint on top of pictures.

I went from clarinet to BASS clarinet. It's like a saxophone, but less sexy.

In 1994, our band went and played in Rapid City, South Dakota in some competition and won everything. It was awesome.

Harls, should have known you also played the clarinet! I chose it because it was the easiest non-flute instrument to carry on the bus. That said, I really enjoyed HS band and made some great friends there. Also, the teachers really trusted us so it was easy to get up to no good. We had something called Bandathon which was essentially a sleepover at the school where everyone hooked up (guys with girls, girls with girls, guys with guys). What a time to be alive!

Ha. I remember our family hosting some other band kids from out of town at our place in early 1993. My bro and I had just received a Super Nintendo the Christmas before and of course got the bloodless Mortal Kombat. The two dudes that stayed at our place loved it. One guy kept calling the boss guy (Goro) Gord because tv resolution sucked back then.
