Expat was referring to the National Mall, a long parklike promenade along which most of the United States government, museums, and libraries are clustered. See Merriam-Webster:

Mall,

Anyway, sucks your sociology prof mislead you. DC is a great city.

Ahhh, that mall! The one you see in the movies with the big fountain, looking towards the whitehouse I presume? Yeah, I might walk past it, snap a couple pics, but I would want to see much more of the city than just that. I don't want to be stuck in a tourist jam for too long.
Sorry, to me, "mall" usually means an enclosed suburban shopping centre. I certainly wouldn't go to DC for that.

Cambridgite, I wasn't offended by your post. Just hoping you make it to DC someday, I know you will like it. And thanks to St. Steven for explaining my mall comment. I didn't mean to imply you would only go to the shopping mall . There is so much to see on the National Mall, many people miss the real city.

Ah, it's been too long since I've been to DC. Great pics.
