A second 'Express' store will be announced on Thursday. My guess it will be in Halifax (or somewhere in Maritimes)

Yeah, I think it's the phase 1 component that is pretty shitty. Haven't been there for years, but having Zellers anchor one side and Sears the other with a bunch of bridal shops inbetween doesn't exactly generate the same foot traffic as the rest of the mall.

Have they considered demolishing or repurposing Phase 1 at all?

There's nothing inherently wrong with Phase I, it just lacks the retailer and attraction mix to generate the strong foot traffic the rest of the mall gets. A few trendy new retailers would probably get things moving again down there.

Those seem like a good idea... they'll bridge the gap nicely between now and whenever a full-size store gets built in Quebec, London and whatever other cities get them (Halifax? Saskatoon?). Any word on whether they're going to have a selection of household goods and accessories, i.e. be more than just a parcel pick-up point?

An IKEA Express in Kingston would be awesome and would actually do very well but I doubt the company would go for it.

A lot of people in Kingston have this strong aversion to leaving the city to buy/do things. Even though Ottawa is only 2 hours away and Toronto & Montreal are only 3 hours away. Long drives are a turn off and people are used to having most of everything they need within a 10 minute drive on Kingston's uncongested roads. Lots of people would become IKEA customers if they could pop by a store here in the city instead of having to drive out to Ottawa.

Urban Outfitters opened in downtown Halifax today, their first Canadian store east of Quebec. This is great news for Barrington Street, a beautiful and historic main drag that has been struggling for a while but is definitely on its way back. Having a destination retailer like UO as an anchor will hopefully draw even more pedestrians to the area.

In Kingston, when Urban Outfitters arrived it actually marked a turnaround point in the health of downtown retail. Hope that new store in Halifax does the same for that street.

from ikea's website - and didn't quebec have a full size store that shut down in the last decade?

it says there will be 99 products for immediate takeaway...

Quote:
Burlington, Ontario – IKEA Canada has announced that they have secured locations for their first two Pick-Up-Points in London and Quebec City. They will be located at 3198 Wonderland Rd S, London and 3111 Avenue Watt, Quebec City. The locations, slated to open late 2015, will allow customers who have shopped online or at an IKEA store to pick up their products closer to where they live. Customers will also be able to; buy services to support their purchases, sit at a computer station to browse www.IKEA.ca to make online purchases, as well as having access to 99 products available for immediate takeaway. IKEA currently has 12 stores across Canada and sees a great growth potential in opening Pick-Up-Points, whose format is part of a global test pilot, in markets where there are currently no stores.

“The ambition is to make IKEA more accessible to the many Canadians.” says Stefan Sjöstrand, President, IKEA Canada. “The Pick-Up-Points allow IKEA to expand quickly into markets that have been identified as having potential, resulting in consumers having easier access to our products.”

Consumers will have the opportunity to interact with the IKEA brand in smart new and convenient ways. The Pick-Up-Point locations will reduce delivery times and costs for customers at the same time as delivering inspiration and services. The locations will feature a home furnishing inspiration areas as well as stations to support customers with their planning process.

“We are continually reviewing expansion opportunities in Canada and consider both London and Quebec City as key markets for expansion.” continues Sjöstrand. “We look forward to serving these markets and are confident that we will have a positive impact on the communities through job creation and service contracts.”

IKEA will be hiring roughly 20-25 co-workers per location. The new co-workers will be welcomed into an engaging environment with a strong focus on people and their professional growth.

I've noticed that as well, although up until the dollar dropped, there were enough people travelling to Watertown, NY to shop. I do know several locals in Kingston who travel to Ottawa to shop occasionally, though one has a cottage in Quebec and goes through Ottawa on the way there anyway.

Cabela's is opening in Moncton NB tomorrow.

In addition, Moncton is getting a Bass Pro Shop, to be opened in the old Crystal Palace building this fall.

The image above shows the ongoing renovations for BPS. The Bass Pro Shop will be about 110,000 sq ft. The Cabela's is 50,000 sq ft.

It's pretty rare in North America for one city to host both of these outdoor outfitters.

Story in the Calgary Herald today about the fate of some of Target's distribution centres. Calgary is being sold to Sobeys, Walmart bought the one in Cornwall and Lowes is buying the one in Milton.

Come next year the Calgary region will have both too, about 10km down the highway from each other (BPS at Cross Iron Mills just outside the city, Cabela's at Deerfoot City [formerly Deerfoot Mall])

HBC to acquire Galeria Kaufhof department stores
Deal will see HBC own 103 stores in Germany

The Hudson's Bay Co. (TSX:HBC) has reached an agreement with German based Metro Group to buy its Galeria Kaufhof department store chain and Belgian subsidiary Inno for $3.9 billion, including the assumption of certain liabilities.

The Toronto-based retailer says in a release issued jointly with Metro Group early Monday morning that the transaction has been approved by both its board of directors and Metro AG's supervisory board.

The release says the deal, which has been in the works for several weeks, is expected to close by the end of the third quarter of 2015, with HBC taking over 103 Galeria Kaufhof stores in Germany, including 59 properties in prime inner-city locations.

HBC, which operates Saks and other chains in the U.S. and Canada, will also acquire 16 Sportarena stores, 16 Galeria Inno stores in Belgium, various logistics centres, warehouses and other properties, and the Galeria Kaufhof head office in Cologne.
