Metro Memphis' expressway system continues its massive expansion with the coming Interstate-22 terminus/ upgraded Lamar Ave corridor.

Lamar Avenue Grant Gets State’s Sole Focus
By Bill Dries/ Memphis Daily News

Quote:
State and local leaders gathered at the BNSF Railway terminal in the heart of the busy freight corridor Tuesday, June 21, to announce the state’s only application for a federal Fastlane grant will be $180 million for Lamar Avenue between Getwell Road and the Mississippi state line... State Senate Majority Leader Mark Norris of Collierville said the project and the grant are the state’s top infrastructure priorities. “This is one of the most significant five-mile stretches of road in the U.S.,” he said.

I'm really excited about the Pinch's development. I guess I'm still hoping for one skyline changing tower to go up there, to be the centerpiece of the revitalized neighborhood. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where the Bass Pro Pedestrian Bridge should go?

Pinch plans look good. I've been cautious to get too excited since it's taken so long for anything to come out but looks like they've planned it out well. Love the density and will be happy to say goodbye to empty parking lots!

Those are some good looking renderings. But what are the chances that's what the Pinch ends up looking like? But if they can get the Pinch to look like that....look out. That would be amazing for downtown. Especially with what's already in the works.

The difference between previous Pinch proposals and now is St. Jude. Big expansions are being planned for both ALSAC and St. Jude, and some people I know at ALSAC have been saying the attitude there is that they are sick of building large parking garages for employees who live 10-20 miles away, that they'd rather spend $$$ to enhance the neighborhood surrounding the hospital/offices and attract employees to live nearby. St. Jude has been aggressively acquiring properties surrounding their campus for this.

No attitude, just surprised that it's been ignored like it's no big deal.

I guess because its been covered extensively in past posts. To be honest, I'm more interested in how Elvis Presley Boulevard as a whole will look after a complete renovation.

That's probably only because of it's location in a more suburban setting. Most posters are more interested in projects are downtown, in South Main, the Pinch, Medical District, University of Memphis area, etc.

Shelby Farms’ $52 million ‘Heart of the Park’ project nears completion
By Tom Charlier of The Commercial Appeal

Quote:
But one transportation project that had figured heavily in the park's design will not be finished any time soon. The $35.9 million Shelby Farms Parkway, running through the western side of the park and connecting Walnut Grove and Whitten roads, is intended to relieve the traffic congestion now plaguing the Shelby Farms area during rush hour while also accommodating trails and access points for the park.

I wish we could get more building codes across the city, like what was did for this McDonald's by the University. It will make neighborhoods feel ALOT bigger bringing buildings to the street. Reminds me what you'll see in the Midwest.

Big River Crossing Update

http://www.bigrivercrossing.com/about/

This is one of the best projects going on right now. I'm most excited that this project further links Memphis and West Memphis. Out of all of Memphis' suburbs, I think West Memphis is the most barren of development. The only problem I have is that West Memphis hasn't began to improve the easternmost section of Broadway. People who cross the bridge will want picture worthy scenes, not what is currently there.

In the future, it would be cool if the West Memphis park could have something like a temporary zoo during the non flooding season. It could display animals native to the Midsouth and be a rustic version of the Memphis zoo.

Downtown bank building to become a hotel, restaurant
By Thomas Bailey Jr. of The Commercial Appeal

Quote:
The new owners of a 54-year-old Downtown bank building plan to convert it into a 70-room, boutique hotel with a streetfront restaurant called Teller and a rooftop bar called Errors & Omissions. The building at 158 Madison is considered one of the city's finest examples of mid-century modern architecture. Erected in 1962 as Leader Federal Savings and Loan...
