Not in Halifax! Everyone who needs to go there should walk (because it is good for them) or take the bus. Or a bike, I suppose, since we have all these bike lanes going to waste.

Nah, we'd just pave over the whole city and turn it into a giant parking lot for this. One lot, 30,000 parking spots.

Are they going to build a new Chicken Burger in the foundation where the old one was, it seems where to leave that mess there.

I believe the building to the right with American Apparel is expanding south and also gaining a floor or 2?

No additional floors, just an expansion and reconfiguration of the back half of the building.

But I think the owner of Mills also owns the chickenburger site. There was talk of redevelopment in that way, but nothing ever came of it.

Yes, the extension of 5466 Spring Garden, the corner building, will only be something like 20 feet. A few years ago the former owner also mused about adding a third storey, so maybe that's a possibility someday.

The whole Chickenburger thing was really bizarre. Did it even last a year? It would have been much nicer to have the old house and restaurant there instead of the parking lot that's there now.

"Mickey MacDonald says he wants to develop the area in advance of the ship building contracts. (CBC)"

Oh, those hay days of the post-ship-building-contract-announcement...

Sister Site #1 on the left, 5504 Spring Garden Road on the right. The Margaretta site in the back on the right is going to be developed soon too. A big change for Birmingham Street. It'll have a scale more like Dresden Row, but hopefully nicer looking modern buildings. There will also be a smoother transition from Schmidtville to Spring Garden Road. You used to have to pick your route a bit carefully if you wanted to walk along attractive, interesting streets. Hopefully the day will come when every street downtown has something interesting for pedestrians.

It's probably time to bury the overhead lines here too:

anyone know why that white block appears to be drywall and not concrete like the rest of the building, could it be to build another chicken burger in the old foundation next to and then smash through the drywall with ease to open up access into the space?

The concrete sections are called "shear walls". They are a structural component of the building - not all exterior blank walls need to be shear walls so it is cheaper and easier to build them out of metal studs and external gyprock.

I have heard rumors that make the Chicken Burger thing at least make a little sense. Posting it on here would probably get me in trouble though.

Is there any possibility of activity on this site in the near future? I would love to see it developed as a small standalone site with something in the 8 storey range.

Developers usually like to consolidate lots so they can do larger buildings at once, but the smaller footprint buildings tend to be more interesting.

And a lot more in keeping with the traditional, dense, fine-grained kind of urbanism that built most of the world's most walkable cities and neighbourhoods. Consolidated lots are economically expedient but I wonder if there's any way planners or city governments can encourage developers to develop new buildings in that fashion

How much space would there be if this is built? http://tealarchitects.com/project/54...g-garden-road/ (thank-you to Jonovision)

Something like 15XX barrington would be a nice fit / step down.
