That was nice, Buck!

Excellent pictures, sfmob! You rocked it. I see you climbed the infamous fire escape to get some of the shots that were taken from the north. I've climbed those stairs to get some night shots of the city.

Quote:
Downtown actually looked better in the early 1990's (when renovations downtown had just begun) than it does today IMO. The downtown region just looks like it has lost some of its original revitalized (early 1990's) ambition and push. Many places have closed up again (by touring downtown on my last trip in the fall). It was sad to see that some of the revitalization that was so strong in the 90's went downhill and returned to shuttered buildings and dreams.

I don't remember downtown in the early '90s, but I thought that's when downtown was a ghost town. Especially compared to today's downtown, where on every street you run into new construction. And I've never heard so much RSA Tower bashing. Of course everyone is entitled to his own opinion. To me, it fits the skyline well. Maybe it's different once you see it in person.

It's hard to look around downtown today and say we're not going somewhere great. And I'm not somebody who would say something like that just to say it.

I always thought Mobile was a cute little town. It looks even better now then when I used to drive through in the 90's.

The Loop? As in midtown? That's a couple miles west of downtown. What is this new mall you're talking about?

Either of you have a link to some info about this mall? I've heard nothing about it.

So there you go.. I know my stuff. Read the news paper in the real estate section, and you can find out a lot of information....
I didn't see anything about it stating that it will be the tallest residential tower.

I love the shots from the eastern shore, africatown bridge, and the sepia one! they all are cool shots.. I used to live in Mobile, and drive through it alll the time now...but I was never really a huge fan of the city.... I do like parts of downtown, though and it seems like a lot of good things are on the way!
oh and by the way, RSA looks nice!

Very nice. Glad to see you took some pictures of the skyline from Mobile Bay. I crossed it everyday, twice a day for 3 weeks in 2004 while working in Pensacola to clean up after Hurricane Ivan. I watchd the construction of the RSA Tower then, although it wasn't up very much, maybe just 10 floors, but it was cool. Glad to see the finished product!

All I'm asking is that timothy shows me where it says that the proposed condo is going to be the tallest residental tower in the "deep south."

I bet he knew SSP would be seeing these pics.

I like the RSA Tower, and think it brings the Mobile skyline into the 21st century. Wonderful set of pics sfmob, thanks.

Go for it, man. I'm with you. Never really been to Mobile but after seeing the photos, I will stop and explore on my next trip along the coast.

I like the new building, too. Some day Mobile will probably have a huge skyline, and the new building is a great way to start.

I detect a bit of Charleston/Savannah/New Orleans type urban flavor here.

Id like to see the condo plans too!

The RiverRoad project that is being built in Baton Rouge ,is a need for Mobile. Condo/Retail is a must! Can t bring up the drawing but it would drive Mobile's boom in another gear.

GREAT PICTURES...

When I was a kid my family owned a summer beach cottage on Dauphin Island (not far from Mobile). We would spend the whole summer down there and on occasion made it up to Mobile for a weekend escape or two....

I'm amazed how much Mobile has grown since then.

Sadly most of Dauphin Island was badly damanged from Hurricane Rita (EDIT: Katrina)... not sure how things are now in 2007.

Good fond memories of Mobile airport and that great town.
When I think of southern Alabama I think of shorts, t-shirts and flip flops... gives me a warm, happy, relaxed feeling inside.

Talking

I have to admit, when I first moved to Mobile, I was sooooo skeptical, not to mentioned pissed. You try leaving America's fastest growing city (PHX.)! but over the years with all the new jobs, expansion of the port, and redevelopment downtown, I've fallen in love with Mobile.
Yeah, so the RSA (I was surprised that they're not calling it the "Battlehouse Tower") is a little funky, but plans for it changed...in early '04 they were calling for it to be over 60 stories...! But it's unique like this city. Actually it reminds me of the Chrysler building (which is my FAVORITE building in the world.)
I think the reason it looks funny though is because the crown doesn't fit the body right, the building is too wide for the crown...it doen't taper enough at the top...and you really can't see the glass on the crown, except at night. i think someone should post some more night photos. Also, a great shot of the skyline is from Springhill College. AMAZING! Trust me, go up there to the area where the new dorms are and you'll be SOOOO amazed...
Anyways I LOOOOVE Mobile and I'm not ashamed to call myself a Mobilian (going 4 years strong!)

I visited Dauphin Island last month + it looked pretty good to me.
There's even a bit of recent condo activity, though I'd just as soon Dauphin Island leave that to Baldwin County.
