Another couple of interesting recent FC's:

55 Catharine St S:

459 Rymal Rd W
Quote:
To develop a 7-storey multiple dwelling containing 47 residential units and a parking podium within the first 3-storeys of the building.

Is this not the Columbia College (Ex hotel) Residence?

Wow, recall this one started as a hotel, and then flipped over to current use. And like Hamilton Eaton Centre, don't think it's lifespan is more than 35 years, odd to lose it, but kind of disposable architecture.

Between 55 Catharine and 101 Hunter, that's going to be a completely different block just like that.

Still loads of empty parking lots just west of there, with no apparent plans. Probably the second ugliest part of the downtown after the area around John Rebecca Park.

According to the Forge and Foster email newsletter, Fengate purchased 48 Ferguson St S:

I feel like I remember a development proposal being at that location.

I recall the restaurant beside it being sold and someone asked the staff and they said it was going to be developed. According the the Forge and Foster email, the price sold for indicates there are approvals, but they aren't aware of any.

by "there are approvals" it may be as simple as the site having as-of-right zoning being in the downtown secondary plan.

If you move south on the google map to the corner of Ferguson and Jackson you will see this building and the ex Lo Presti’s at Maxwell’s restaurant share the same parking lot. In the google map picture dated August 2022, there is a machine there in the lot doing soil samples.

The talk of a development is from a Spectator article from April 14, 2022 called:

Lo Presti’s at Maxwell’s restaurant closing to make way for downtown Hamilton development

^ with the restaurant gone, and 46-48 Ferguson S. (both halves of that building were purchased?) that's a pretty big lot.

Anyone heard anything about the proposed towers adjacent to Landmark, in that other large lot on its south flank? I recall there wasn't much detail, but the plan was to go tall.

Definitely recall this -- early 90s? It was a Journey's End Hotel (remember them?) when they did a push into high-rise urban properties. There was a restaurant on the first floor where the solarium area is located. Similar locations were built (among others) on Carlingview Dr near YYZ (now an Embassy Suites) and in Downtown Windsor (now a Towneplace Suites). It's tenure as a hotel in Hamilton was brief.

I’ve parked in the garage there before and there are still signs saying “hotel will not be responsible for lost or damaged property” lol.

Hotel guests were few and far between because a recession hit soon after it opened, so they converted it to a student residence. I dated a Chinese girl who was living there in the late 90's. I met her on one of the original social media platforms, ICQ.

Hopefully not, that would be a big hit to Augusta. That street has already lost a couple bars in the past year to covid lockdowns.
