The Census Bureau finalized state population estimates for 2023 recently. Idaho's population was estimated to be 1,964,726 on 7/1/23.

Between 4/1/20-7/1/23, Idaho was the fourth fastest growing state in the nation, at 1.3%. Only South Carolina (1.7%), Florida (1.6%), and Texas (1.6%) grew faster.

Idaho did not surpass Nebraska in population but should do so sometime over the next few months...Nebraska's population was 1,978,379. This will make Idaho the 37th most populous state. At this growth rate, Idaho will pass New Mexico in about 5 years to become the 36th most populous state. After that we have quite a while before moving up the state population table any more since Mississippi, Kansas, and Arkansas are all at least 39% more populous than New Mexico currently is.

https://www.idahostatesman.com/news/...283514643.html

Nothing will be in stone for anoter 6 years, but it is looking more likely that Idaho will gain a 3rd seat in the U.S. House after the 2030 Census...

Crazy! I'm old enough to remember when the state surpassed 1 million in the early 90s, and, that was a big deal back then. It's safe to say the secret about Idaho is out.

It's crazy our MSA is nearing the 900,000 mark and the CSA near one million. Ada County is over half a million. It's never going to stop lol. We all love growth at this forum, but how do we protect our quality of life?

It appears people in another thread are using old and incorrect data when referencing our population base.

there's some unsavory characters in THAT city's threads... best to just steer clear of that thread all together. That thread is literally 10 years worth of posts with them fighting and bickering.

Nope. Especially considering all of the new apartment units and homes built and being built within city limits. Apartments fill up fast and homes sell quickly.

I took my family of 8 out of Utah and took it to Nebraska. That should keep Idaho from that 37th spot for at least a week or two.

It isn't very accurate to extrapolate short term growth rates but it's fun so I am going to do it anyway...here are population estimates in 3 years (2026) using population growth rates (%) between 2020-2023 from the U.S. Census Bureau:

2026 city population projections:
1. Boise 234,809
2. Meridian 152,136
3. Nampa 128,883
4. Caldwell 77,008
5. Idaho Falls 70,163
6. Pocatello 59,736
7. Coeur d'Alene 58,914
8. Twin Falls 57,959
9. Post Falls 51,128
10. Rexburg 40,539
11. Lewiston 35,439
12. Eagle 33,835
13. Kuna 32,134
14. Moscow 27,289
15. Ammon 21,530
16. Mountain Home 17,384
18. Hayden 17,230
19. Chubbuck 17,085

Is there an exact number for the population of the MSA?

Edit: whoops 822,890 people, forgetting to read the article like the dumbass I can be
But holy crap 100,000 people in 4 years is insane! And Boise finally hit 1/4 of a million people.

There is a lot of ada county population that IS essentially boise but not technically in the city limits.. Southwest Ada County Alliance alone is 30-40k people that once annexed will boost quite a bit. It almost happened last fall, but it's only a matter of time

I grew up there and I can definitively say yes. It was maybe 40K into the early 90's. Also factor in that it is right next to Ammon. The two have grown into each other. Ammon was just a small farm community, but now it's new subdivisions, retail, restaurant, business, etc.

Pocatello has grown a bit but not nearly at the same pace. When I was growing up, Idaho Falls and Pocatello generally had identical populations, but IF took off.

Twin Falls and surrounding area are growing fast, and the panhandle cities (Coeur d'Alene, Post Falls, Sandpoint) have grown a lot.

Check out Coeur d'Alene's thread. A tad smaller of a city than Idaho Falls but the 2nd largest metro area in the state of Idaho and the second best skyline as well!
