I'm not sure what is worse to go through. Having someone in your family murdered, or having someone in your family murder someone else.

We hate to think about it, but it's a fact that we're more likely to be murdered by a lover, ex-lover, family member, friend, business associate, etc... than a stranger.

Which is why murder "statistics" are such a silly way to compare the relative safety of a given city - at least in Canada.

That is true. If you take that into account, and if you are also not a member of a criminal gang and don't deal in illicit drugs I suspect your chances of being murdered in Canada by someone not known to you are close to nil.

Throw in not living in poverty, and your chances of being a victim of any crime in general are extremely low. Random crime is not a common thing in Canada, and we're lucky because the rarity of it means when one does happen, it is not tolerated or shrugged off easily.

Regina has 6 murders - so far - this year; Saskatoon has 1.

More on the 18-year-old shooting by the Toronto cop to coming out today. Terrible.

From yesterday:

Survey shows Calgarians feeling safer in city
Police commission says "numbers unprecedented” in Canada
By Clara Ho, Calgary Herald

Quote:
Calgarians are increasingly feeling safer year after year but are still under-reporting crimes, according to a recent survey from the Calgary police commission.

The survey, released Tuesday, shows 55 per cent of respondents strongly agree that Calgary is a safe city.

That number has been climbing since 2008, at the height of an outbreak of deadly gang violence, when only 23 per cent strongly agreed the city was safe.

In addition, 97 per cent of respondents this year are overall satisfied with the Calgary Police Service, “an all-time high,” commission chairman Mike Shaikh told reporters Tuesday.

“These numbers are unprecedented across the country,” Shaikh said. “We’re very pleased with the results. We’ve set a very high standard for us.”

Of the respondents polled, 10 per cent said they were personally victims of a crime in the past 12 months. However, only 67 per cent reported the crime to police.

I think Saskatoon has had at least four, according to this. Still on track to decline over previous years, however.

We had a fatal double shooting in suburban St. John's tonight. Two people were shot and killed at a doctor's office in the Villa Nova Mall in Manuels, part of our largest suburb of Conception Bay South.

Police are warning residents in the area that the suspect(s) are still at large and they should lock their doors and not leave their homes.

A gay man in was almost murdered in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia this past weekend. He was basically hunted down in a pack, because they were too pussy to try to pick a fight with a "pansy" on their own. Fucking cowards. They stabbed him in the back twice, paralyzing him for life, and then slit his throat. He survived though... he's only 27 years old.

Gay Nova Scotia man left paralyzed after violent attack
By Mairin Prentiss Global News

NEW GLASGOW, N.S. – A 19-year-old man has been charged in connection with a stabbing in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia that left a 27-year-old-man paralyzed from the waist down.

New Glasgow police Const. Ken MacDonald said Shane Edward Matheson of Trenton, N.S. is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace, in the violent attack on Scott Jones early Saturday morning.

So it looks as though the two people shot and killed at the Villa Nova Mall in Manuels - one man and one woman - were known to the shooter. Police surrounded a home in Chamberlains but there was no stand-off, the suspect was not inside. However, a death at the Anglican Cemetery on Kenmount Road in St. John's has been confirmed and everyone is saying unofficially that it's the shooter and that he took his own life.

The rumour going around is that the shooter and victims are a husband, wife, and male lover - but we don't know which of the men was the shooter.

This one incident makes this our deadliest year in a long time.

A bit more info from CBC:

Quote:
A body found at a St. John's cemetery this morning is connected to a double homicide at a health clinic in a neighbouring town, CBC News has learned.
Quote:
Const. Talia Murphy of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary would not provide details on the discovery of the body at the cemetery, but said people living near the site of the shootings can breathe more easily.

"At this point, the level of fear in Conception Bay South and the public safety concerns are reduced," she said.

"We do have a person of interest that we are looking at, and we do know that the three individuals involved were known to each other."

The woman was shot inside a health clinic at Villa Nova, while the man was shot outside, sources have told CBC News. The complex includes retailers and office space for doctors and physiotherapists.

Education officials kept three neighbourhood schools closed Wednesday morning: Topsail Elementary, Villa Nova Junior High and Holy Spirit High.

Montreal has 22. Our lowest total in the modern era is 29 in 2008. So there's a chance we could break that.

^ is that 22 figure for the 1.65 million population or does it include the island too, which would be 2 million people? Either way, very impressive, especially considering half of those are targeted mob hits.

Not a good week for Regina with the city's 8th, 9th, and potentially 10th murder happening.

An 18 year-old was murdered last night in Regina.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskat...-end-1.2325015

This follows the murder of a 24 year-old woman the previous day.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskat...n-24-1.2303371

The day before that, a body was found in a storm channel yet the cause of death has not been named.

Surrey broke its record just a few days ago of 23 murders so far in 2013. Old record was 21 murders.
