Medical device, material makers cluster in Kaohsiung Science Park

Rebecca Kuo, Kaohsiung; Adam Hwang, DIGITIMES [Monday 18 December 2017]

Kaohsiung Science Park (KSP) under the Southern Taiwan Science Park (STSP) has become a cluster of medical device and material makers in Taiwan, with 73 enterprises stationed there, according to the STSP administration.

The 73 firms have invested NT$26.2 billion (US$865 million) cumulatively in the park and generated total sales of over NT$7.9 billion during January-October 2017. They have 2,587 employees currently.

Of the 73 firms, 37 have obtained Taiwan Food and Drug Administration certification, 13 received US Food and Drug Administration certification for 510(k) pre-market notification, 23 passed the EU CE Marking certification.

With help from the Ministry of Science and Technology, KSP will work to encourage local medical practitioners to adopt products made there, promote their products to university-affiliated hospitals in Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines and Malaysia, and to the global market.

The nation’s first 3D printing industrial cluster for medical devices has taken shape in Kaohsiung, the Ministry of Science and Technology said yesterday, adding that medical devices for body parts from head to toe can be created there.

The ministry in December last year unveiled the first demonstration site for 3D-printed medical devices and smart manufacturing at the Southern Taiwan Science Park’s (南部科學工業園) branch campus in Kaohsiung’s Lujhu District (路竹).

The Food and Drug Administration on Jan. 12 launched a set of guidelines governing 3D-printed medical devices, making Taiwan the first Asian nation to establish regulations on such devices, the ministry said.

The ministry is this year to help local medical device developers obtain ISO 13485:2016 certification, which specifies requirements for medical devices, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Hsu Yu-chin (許有進) said.

There are 54 medical device developers at the science park, which has a campus in Tainan and another in Kaohsiung, with more than NT$9.28 billion (US$310.1 million) invested, the Southern Taiwan Science Park Bureau said.

The Kaohsiung campus has attracted key players in 3D printing and medical devices, such as dental implant maker Alliance Global Technology Co (全球安聯), joint prosthesis maker United Orthopedic Corp (聯合骨科) and machine manufacturer Tongtai Machine and Tool Co (東台精機), the ministry said.

Medical devices — especially dental implants — are one of the most popular applications for 3D printing, which can produce customized devices, Tongtai chairman Yen Jui-hsiung (嚴瑞雄) said.

While 3D printing cannot replace all traditional methods of manufacturing, it can boost the efficiency of materials, such as making aircraft components lighter or shoe soles more elastic by using printing powders made of different materials, he said.

While the aerospace industry has proven to be a niche market for 3D printing in other nations, Taiwan still lacks “bolder” industrial designers, as well as investors who are willing to support designers with groundbreaking ideas, he added.

Merck Taiwan to invest in Kaohsiung expansion

By Lisa Wang / Staff reporter

Merck Group Taiwan yesterday said that it plans to invest substantially on expanding its fab in Kaohsiung’s Lujhu District (路竹) to better serve its local customers, including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC, 台積電).

The company said it plans to expand its production space by 50 percent in the next five years and its workforce by about 40 percent, Merck Group Taiwan managing director Dick Hsieh (謝志宏) told a media briefing in Taipei.

Hsieh declined to disclose investment details, but said that the latest investment would exceed the total amount Merck has invested in Taiwan over the past few years.

Those investments would be made to address the local semiconductor material market, the largest in the world with a market value of US$11.3 billion last year, Merck said, citing statistics from industrial trade group SEMI.

Taiwan has occupied the top spot for the past 10 years, SEMI said on Tuesday.

Merck has been actively expanding into the semiconductor materials market through acquisitions in recent years, Suresh Rajaraman, senior vice president and business field head of thin film solutions, said yesterday.

The company acquired Versum Materials Inc, an Arizona-based semiconductor materials supplier, in October last year after acquiring special chemical supplier AZ Electronics Materials SA in 2014.

Those acquisitions helped Merck broaden its product portfolio to include the materials, chemicals and gas used in the seven major steps in manufacturing chips, it said.

Merck set up a new lab at its Kaohsiung manufacturing campus soon after its acquisition of Versum Materials. Next year, one production line would be allocated to Kaohsiung and more materials would be produced in Taiwan, Merck said.

Merck said it is also developing new directed self-assembly material for 3-nanometer technology and even more advanced technologies.

Entegris Makes Major Investment in New Manufacturing Facility in Taiwan

By AIT News Desk On Dec 24, 2020

Excerpt

The expansion positions the company to collaborate more closely and respond more rapidly to its customers’ accelerated development cycles and product ramps

Entegris, Inc., a world-class supplier of advanced materials and process solutions for the semiconductor and other high-technology industries, announced that the company is expanding its manufacturing presence in Taiwan with an investment of approximately $200 million over the next three to five years.

Entegris plans to commence construction of the new facility in early 2021 and expects to begin initial operations in late 2021 as it ramps to full production in subsequent phases. Located in Southern Taiwan’s Kaohsiung Science Park, the new, 27,000 square-meter facility will develop and produce solutions critical to chipmakers. These include filters for microcontamination control, gas delivery systems, advanced chemistries, and other Entegris products and services. The site where the new facility will be located totals approximately 61,700 square meters, which will allow for the expansion of manufacturing capacity, as needed.

According to Bertrand Loy, Entegris’ president and chief executive officer, expanding the company’s manufacturing capacity reflects the increased and growing demand for its products and services from leading global manufacturers of semiconductors in Taiwan and the broader Asia Pacific region. Based on IC Insights’ Global Wafer Capacity report in 2020, nearly 22% of the global semiconductor wafer fab capacity is in Taiwan while the Asia region, including Taiwan, Korea, China, and Japan, produce approximately 75% of all global semiconductors.

“Taiwan is a well-established global leader in the semiconductor industry, and with this expanded presence we will be well positioned to be even more responsive to our customers’ emerging needs as we work closely with them to accelerate their development cycles and product ramps. In addition, our closer proximity will strengthen supply security to our customers in the region while supplementing our expansive manufacturing capacity throughout Asia in South Korea, Japan, Malaysia, and China,” Loy said.

As part of the planned expansion, the company expects to recruit more than 200 new employees with engineering backgrounds and manufacturing experience to add to its existing Taiwan headcount of approximately 300.

I think it's very cool that people are promoting 3D printers for medicine, it really increases the quality of medicine. This area should move along with technology. I would also like to have an air freshener in all rooms. I recently bought one from buyersimpact, and now I can't stay in rooms with dirty air. For big people who are in treatment, it will be very pleasant. I am sure that this will be done in the near future.
