Except when the client is willing to spend a couple of extra millions to get something extraordinary/brag-worthy, as is obviously the case with this Libeskind hotel I guess Foster is one of the few who can combine great design with economic reasoning.

University of Auckland New Business School, Auckland, New Zealand
FJMT and Archimedia collaborate to create iconic new Auckland University building does the business

A new landmark symbolising research and knowledge was sought by the University, which values excellence, innovation and progress and reflects an openness and embrace of the wider community. FJMT and Archimedia drew inspiration directly from the fusion of natural landscape, urban form and Maori / Colonial heritage of cultural exchange. The fluid and open architectural expression, through a series of ‘breathing’ glass and stainless steel ribbons, creates a gesture of invitation, outreach and optimism, gathering the energy of the site into a major new public open space.

Machias Elementary School, Snohomish, United States
NAC Architecture reinterprets the idea of 'rural' for a contemporary school

Machias is a replacement elementary school. Located in a river valley with ranches, barns and farmhouses, the physical and cultural context has a distinct rural quality. The site is a plateau slightly above the valley floor with a forested hill as a natural boundary to the east. The client had a strong goal for the new building 'to be rural'. It became apparent that they did not have a clear notion of what rural meant to them but they liked 'the idea of rural'. So with that the task was set.

GDPE Landmark Building, Guangzhou, China
'Lucky' coin-inspired structure on Pearl River, Guangzhou, meets mixed reviews online

Construction is pushing on with rapid pace at a significant waterside scheme on the Pearl River, Guangzhou, designed by Italian architect Joseph di Pasquale for the Guangdong Plastics Exchange. The 33-storey commercial facility has been inspired by the jade Bi Disks synonymous with rank and moral excellence throughout Chinese history and chief engineer on the project, Wang Zhanshan, has detailed: “It’s a real fusion of Western and Chinese design. The distinctive feature of the building is that it is shaped like an old Chinese jade or a waterwheel and also has good feng shui for attracting fortune. A golden coin, jade or waterwheel alongside the river means luck to Cantonese: Water brings money.”

The Presidential Archives, Yeongi-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea
SAMOO's Presidential Archives cube invites visitors to walk the footsteps of past leaders

As a place that exhibits the records of Korean presidents, the Presidential Archive may appear rigid and authoritative because of the weighty theme. Thus this design by international firm SAMOO aims to be an archive where people can visit freely without feeling pressured. People are invited to enjoy themselves viewing the historical records of nearly a century and to stroll along the footpath of the former presidents of South Korea, conversing with the waterside park on a low hill.

My condolences to the people of Taipei, that' is a particularly hideous building. I like most of the stuff in this thread, or at least appreciate it, but that Taipei thing looks like something out of the worst part of the late 70's and early 80's and will probably be considered an abomination in 50 years.

SOM wins masterplan competition for Beijing Bohai Innovation City

SOM has won the job to design a compact, environmentally-enhanced community of satellite cities along the Chinese high-speed rail corridors connecting Beijing to the port city of Tianjin. The city expansion will host 17.6 million sq m of mixed use development with a focus on providing a premier headquarters location for advanced industries in the dynamically growing Bohai Rim, a region that now accounts for more than a quarter of China’s GDP. Half of the 1,473-hectare site is allocated to open space, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable urban growth.

^^Also a good portion of the buildings you chose are just tall skyscrapers that aren't on the cutting edge or bold, just... big. Just look through the rest if the pages of this thread and you can see the character of the buildings posted here, and noticeably skyscrapers are not represented much. This is not a skyscraper oriented thread.
