Award-winning firm Snøhetta has been commissioned by the Ras Al Khaimah investment Authority and RAKEEN to undertake the architectural design for the Gateway project in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah. Situated in the desert 150 km to the east of Dubai this landmark project will mark the gateway to the emirate and form the entrance to the new planned capital city of Ras Al Khaimah. The urban master plan for the city is currently being under taken by the Netherlands based architectural practice OMA. The Gateway project is situated at the entrance to the city and will form a landmark for the city entrance.

An architect not only designs a building, but they also consider the functionality. In other world they use their experience to produce the most economical and functional design for a client.

Except when the client is willing to spend a couple of extra millions to get something extraordinary/brag-worthy, as is obviously the case with this Libeskind hotel I guess Foster is one of the few who can combine great design with economic reasoning.

The fluid and open architectural expression, through a series of ‘breathing’ glass and stainless steel ribbons, creates a gesture of invitation, outreach and optimism, gathering the energy of the site into a major new public open space.

NAC Architecture reinterprets the idea of 'rural' for a contemporary school

Machias is a replacement elementary school. Located in a river valley with ranches, barns and farmhouses, the physical and cultural context has a distinct rural quality. The site is a plateau slightly above the valley floor with a forested hill as a natural boundary to the east. The client had a strong goal for the new building 'to be rural'. It became apparent that they did not have a clear notion of what rural meant to them but they liked 'the idea of rural'. So with that the task was set.

Zaha Hadid’s first permanent building in Hong Kong is due to complete this year and it has just been announced that the banded tower at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University will be used as the base for Hong Kong’s first Desigh Institute for Social Innovation. The University has been aided in this venture by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust who donated HK$249m to the cause.

'Lucky' coin-inspired structure on Pearl River, Guangzhou, meets mixed reviews online

Construction is pushing on with rapid pace at a significant waterside scheme on the Pearl River, Guangzhou, designed by Italian architect Joseph di Pasquale for the Guangdong Plastics Exchange. The 33-storey commercial facility has been inspired by the jade Bi Disks synonymous with rank and moral excellence throughout Chinese history and chief engineer on the project, Wang Zhanshan, has detailed: “It’s a real fusion of Western and Chinese design. The distinctive feature of the building is that it is shaped like an old Chinese jade or a waterwheel and also has good feng shui for attracting fortune. A golden coin, jade or waterwheel alongside the river means luck to Cantonese: Water brings money.”
