Saw this happening yesterday...buildings were in the midst of being knocked down...went past there today, and they were down completely, with dump trucks lined up to take the rubble away! At the rate they are going, they will have the site dug out below grade, and be prepping the basement levels before the end of summer...

It's an example of the golden rule, as in "he who has the gold makes the rules" (told me by an EDC employee many years ago!).

So should I mark this thread as "under construction" or wait until we've got a hole in the ground?

Holes in the ground from the old foundations were exposed this morning, and it looked like they were preparing to dig around them...

Mystery solved!

I bought some PC parts today and I talked to one of the guys from Laurier computer about what was there:

The door to nowhere actually goes "nowhere" the previous computer site was apparently a 5 story building destroyed by a fire. The doorway used to lead to oil/boiler rooms to heat the thing and have long since been vacant. He said also under the Laurier side you will see a bunch of old showers to the West side. The building used to be some athletics club in the long long past and the change rooms remained until the demolition.

Before the computer store it was a location of Derouin Opticians(now New Look)and that door lead to a small supply room.Trust me I work of that company, and I'm old enough to remember.ESSILOR is an optical lens manufacture. The store closed in early 1991 if I remember correctly.

Broccolini issued permit for $6.2M EDC foundation
By Peter Kovessy, Ottawa Business Journal Staff
Wed, May 13, 2009 11:00 AM EST

As backhoes, dump trucks and construction fencing appear on the corner of Slater and O'Connor streets, the city has issued the first round of construction permits for the new headquarters of Export Development Canada.

Last month, Broccolini Construction, which is building the 19-storey office tower with Canderel, received a construction permit for the excavation, shoring and foundation for the three-storey underground parking structure. The estimated construction value for the 122,200-square-foot foundation is $6.2 million, according to city records.

Additionally, Broccolini received four demolition permits to remove the 17-unit, three-storey residential apartment building and the three single-storey commercial buildings on the site, the records show.

Earlier this year, Brouse Holdings sold the property to a company associated with Broccolini, 150 Slater Street (Ottawa) Inc., for $18 million, according to land registry records.

Site plans filed with the city show Broccolini is planning to build a 19-storey, 403,000-square-foot office tower for the Crown corporation, which currently occupies 394,000 square feet in two neighbouring buildings at O'Connor and Gloucester streets.

New EDC tower to cost $150M
By Peter Kovessy, Ottawa Business Journal Staff
Thu, May 28, 2009 2:00 PM EST

The new 18-storey office tower being constructed for Export Development Canada at the corner of Slater and O'Connor streets will have an estimated project value of $150 million, officials say.

Almost a year after OBJfirst reported EDC was in negotiations with Broccolini Construction and Canderel to build its new headquarters, the Crown corporation formally announced the agreement Thursday.

In a statement, officials said EDC will lease the building from the joint venture for two decades through to 2031. A spokesperson would not disclose the rental rate EDC has agreed to pay.

At 520,000 square feet, the new tower will be the largest office construction project in downtown Ottawa in the last 25 years, officials say. Documents previously filed with the city show it will contain 403,000 square feet of office space, 14,000 square feet of other commercial space and three storeys of underground parking.

According to sources, the Broccolini/Canderel site beat out three other contenders: Great West Life's property, currently a parking garage next to the Bank of Montreal building on Laurier Avenue between O'Connor and Bank streets, a Brookfield site on the southeast corner of Kent and Queen streets, and EDC's current home which is split between two buildings at O'Connor and Gloucester streets.

The Crown corporation currently has 1,000 employees headquartered at the two Ottawa buildings, with leases expiring in 2010 and 2011. With construction of the new tower not expected to be completed until fall 2011, spokesperson Phil Taylor said EDC would either consolidate its employees in a single building for a year or seek a lease extension.
