I wouldn't widen streets because it would take away from the pedestrian traffic. The nice thing about downtown and the West-End, especially, is that everything is extremely walk-able. Widening the streets for cars would be a huge mistake IMO.

You are right in that there needs to be a transit solution to the west-end. I'm not sure what it would be but I would almost experiment with bus-only streets? Of course I am open to infrastructure improvements and compromises.

But first things first: let's get dense in the west!

Seoul is a great city, but I don't think there's anything for Vancouver to learn from it. The two cities are polar opposites in almost every way. Seoul is a bright, vibrant, loud, white collar party city. It shares next to nothing in common with Vancouver.

Now, I've only being living in Seoul for a year, and part time at that, but the main difference I see is the mentality of the citizens. Most Seoulites work very hard, and drink even harder. After work hours, and especially on the weekends, everyone is out eating and drinking. Everywhere in the city is bursting with energy in these late night hours. It's a cultural thing to go out and drink with your peers (and sometimes your boss) after work. To not do that would mean you're not a team player which could hurt your standing in the company. So even if you don't want to go out and drink, you do it anyway. The city has, accordingly, built around this cultural quirk. I have never, ever seen so many bars in one place in my life. If you like to drink, I can't think of a better city to do it in than Seoul.

Vancouver, on the other hand, is built around its natural amenities, and disassociating yourself with your work week. The office district is a 9-5 place that one wants to escape, not settle down in for a night of debauchery.

I think Vancouver is changing though away from that, people are tired of the boring city.

Stumbled across this

Slightly sad news, as it was one urban drive across the viaduct. I did it every time I was in Seattle.

Good to hear that the tunnel is opening up next month. I look forward to driving it in May. Is it going to be tolled?

I had a question, I was watching a video about this new tower under construction, I believe the second tallest in Australia which is in Melbourne. They showed the tower was still under construction but the lower levels had residents move in already while the top of the tower is still being constructed with many many floors to go.

Can the same happen in Canada? Can people move into a building still well under construction?

Yes it’s happened, you’ll see only the bottom third of Vanvouver House has lights when you go over the bridge to downtown. Likely is bureaucratic hell to get though.

Are you implying that people are living in Vancouver House already?

There are not people living in Vancouver house.
Also you will not get occupancy in a Vancouver tower until the life safety systems are active. It could be possible to build it in such a way to allow it via different zoning but most likely more work then it would be worth.

Or... they could just be testing the lights? It's pretty common for new buildings to be fully lit up - a sign of people moving in is some of the lights going off.

I checked with a family member I have who I thought moved in, move in was set months ago but was delayed. Saw the lights and assumed they moved in.

OK I can't imagine living in a construction site would be safe or comfortable.

No, the noise and the complete mess outside of your front door would be awful.

it's the Australia 108, they said residents started moving in in June 2018, in September 2018 it had reached 200m with more than 117m to go at that point it was only 2/3 of its final height. Final height will be 317m and complete in 2020.

But it's electronic and BC plates are not on file with WSDOT and there's not reciprocal agreement with BCMOT
(and unlikely to be one now give that BC removed tolls from bridges here).
Same as the WSDOT floating bridges and HOT lanes - BC cars won't be billed.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Super video!! Seattle is going for a total facelift, it seems. (Not to mention all the new buildings, esp residential). Yes, a similar video for Vancouver would be great!
