I passed through west end the other night and was amazed by the change since about the time Zeus cafe opened. This area is quickly becoming one of my favorite parts the city.

Philo! I was having that exact conversation with a friend yesterday. I live between the south park blocks and 405. Ten years ago, this neighborhood was exploding with new construction and positive change. Then the area near Burnside became the focus of change. I keep hoping the area between the two will be next, but damn those surface parking lots. Surface parking lots and missed opportunities, like Delano Tower (and others) that never happened.

Yeah, I am definitely waiting to see the West End become the next urban neighborhood in Portland. Would love to see a mixture of residential and commercial towers popping up along that area. It would definitely fill out downtown Portland.

I walk through that area all the time and it has changed so much even during the development bust of the great recession. The newly remodeled culver building at the corner of 12th + Alder (Tasty + Alder's building) is pushing the West End energy farther south. Project Ecological Developments new Alley project connecting Stark and Burnside is replacing some night clubs with more cool retail. I did a quick search and found this old article from a few years back about possible new office buildings in Portland. It highlights two possible projects in the area that could come to life when the office market fully turns. I see great things ahead for this area.

I only wish the city would fix the Burnside divide and connect the Westend more strongly to the Pearl.

Completing the Burnside/Couch couplet out to NW 19th would accomplish that. Seems like such a no-brainer. So who were the brainless idiots who opposed that? A few snooty new residents in the Brewery Blocks?

Huh, this article from 2011 states that TMT was mothballing Park Ave West for 2 years and that they will restart it in late 2013.

http://www.oregonlive.com/business/i...r_to_be_m.html

Also, I was on the site a few weeks ago snapping photos of the hole in the ground. While I was doing that, a guy in a suit walked by me, looked me in the eye, and said "don't worry, it won't be long now."

It was so out of the blue that I think I believe him.

Isn't trusting strange men in suits how we got into this economic debacle?
