I loved going to the Indy this past year. I was especially pleased when I heard of the potential deal with Octane, believing that it would bring new life and a new vision to the event.

After seeing the crowds there they day that I went, I can't believe that anyone would want to forego such a great event. This is something that Edmontonians should be proud of and should nurture because I firmly believe that the Indy can grow and become a summer staple, like so many other festivals and other events in this city.

I do hope to return to the Indy next year, and I feel that Edmonton would suffer a great loss if it was to end now.

Hopefully city council and Octane can see this too.

Certainly an interesting turn of events if Mr. Hicks is to be believed...

You know, that's what this event needs... if they're going to do it, do it big, make Edmonton THE destination for racing fans, spend the money for a proper facility and invest in it long term

If you can do Indy one week, Nascar the week after - you could make it a huge boost for tourism in Edmonton and Alberta as I'm sure you would have thousands who would spend the week in-between touring around Edmonton and/or Alberta.

I think we could have a fantastic road track in Edmonton. I have NO idea what the criterial and regulations would be regarding widths of lanes/topography/surface - but imagine how cool it would be to run a race along routes such as 97th ave/the leg tunnel/McDougal Hill/Grierson Hill/109 st/river valley road/ groat rd?

ignoring the previously mentioned logistics of closing off roads and such....From a safety standpoint, bridges, edges of banks...i dont think that would ever fly.

^ logistics and safety aside, I'd love to see a race using the high level bridge as well.

EDMONTON — Negotiations to keep the Indy car race in Edmonton could see the city putting in less sponsorship money than originally expected, Coun. Bryan Anderson said Friday.

Although council voted last summer to contribute up to $5.5 million to the event over a three-year contract, Anderson is hopeful that figure can be whittled down to about $1 million annually.

Rumor and hearsay, but interesting...

http://www.edmontonsun.com/news/colu.../16241351.html

Quote:
The Edmonton Indy 2011 is a-swirl in rumours.

Ever since the business community stepped up to cover the cost of extra paving, “by the ways” keep reportedly happening.

Extra paving costs were the alleged reason race producer Octane Racing of Montreal and city negotiators first walked away from the table.

Now they are back, and, by the way, I’m told the city wants to work into the agreement a move of the racetrack, in a few years time, to Northlands.

Oh my. This particular wrinkle would suck the Indy into the grand vortex of who runs what in this city, brought about by the impending new downtown arena.

It involves City Hall, Northlands, the province, Edmonton Economic Development Corporation, the new arena, the Northlands complex, Rexall Place, Shaw Conference Centre ...

By the way, Octane Racing is coming back to the table asking for more concessions and goodies — like the city back-stopping present and future provincial and federal grants for the race (i.e. substituting city cash if the feds/province were to pull out.)

Because, by the way, Octane has an ace up its sleeve, Calgary being ready and willing to stage an Indy on that weekend. In 2011.

Which, by the way, gives Octane far more bargaining power. If you don’t want us, Calgary does ...

By the way, this is getting more complicated by the day.

BS for Calgary, no way it could be done at race city and I cannot see a street circuit.
