How many people who opened this thread expected to see shimmering skyscrapers, modern shopping malls, beautiful waterfront homes and an otherwise ultra-modern look?

I am not afraid to admit that when I clicked the thread - I was expecting something much older and not near as modern.

Very cool and makes me want to vacation there someday.

Really is an amazing city. The whole centre is being restored and pedestrianised, and culturally it's one of the hippest, most pluralistic places on the planet, with shedloads of history, and a turquoise coast. Damascus, San Francisco and Rome rolled into one - with beaches. Its predicted Istanbul, currently skyrocketing up the charts as the 'secret' gets out, will become one of the most visited cities in the world, alongside London, NYC, Paris.

As do Armenians.

It's "Konstantnupolis" in Armenian, or more commonly -- just "polis" (Greek for "city" of course).

A century ago, Istanbul was the center of Armenian life in the Ottoman Empire, hence Armenians' reference to it as THE city. Of course very few Armenians remain in Turkey today...

Thanks for photos!
Now I know that the old USSR film said true about Istanbul. Film said: Istanbul - it's the city of contrasts.
Now I see, that's really wonderful contrast between old and new, between east and west, between Europe and Asia!
Thanks for the thread again!

My image about Istanbul has completely changed!
Though I visited there once before about 20 years ago,
still Istanbul is on my top destination list.
Thanks for amazing pictures.
