If you look at the rest of the photos, this just looks stunning...Imagine looking out from the new bridge and seeing that?!

Do you think something like this will still end up being built? I mean the province must have options in their leg. grounds redevelopment which involves options pertaining to the existing buildings on this site.

With the uncertainty with what will happen with the provincial government in a month or two this may be the only opportunity we get.

we'll make up for the wow factor with the new barn for the oilers a couple bocks west.

EXACTLY. It's the old Cohos cabal at it again. Seriously, does Edmonton have an addiction to shit architects? Cohos and Gooch are the serial killers of architecture.

^ Yes! It looks like what the current RAM would look like if it were rejuvinated and modernized. So sad. Something different and dare I say *iconic*, Edmonton? No? Figures.

You're right, I gotta stop making that mistake. "dare I say iconic, for Edmonton [from the province]"?

The RAM is a provincial project not a municipal one. Blame the province for choosing the wrong team, not the city. This has nothing to do with the City or it's history of allowing mediocre projects to be built.

I know, hence my correction. However, it does add to the track record of mediocrity in Edmonton, whether it be due to the city, province, federal government, or other groups.

It's the Province that has a love affair with Cohos, see pretty much almost every new post secondary building built in the last 15 years.

Actually they go all the way back to the Laugheed era. There were Hospitals in most every small town that were built by them. See Devon's hospital then Smoky Lake Coronation Consort, + many more.

Critics assess Royal Alberta Museum winning design

BY ELISE STOLTE, EDMONTONJOURNAL.COM SEPTEMBER 15, 2011

EDMONTON - From one perspective, images of the new downtown Royal Alberta Museum almost look like several buildings instead of one, says architecture critic Trevor Boddy.

“It’s a very rich scene. It’s like a bit of cookery that’s got a bit of everything,” he said, pouring through new images online. There’s a large boxy wall on the west, then soft, curvilinear forms and open glazing through the centre. Another raised box is cantilevered out several meters along 97th Street.

Museum takes indoors outside

Architect of winning R AM design incorporates terraces, amphitheatre, park space

BY ELISE STOLTE, JOURNAL STAFF WRITER SEPTEMBER 15, 2011

To Royal Alberta Museum architect Donna Clare, sun-speckled aspen leaves tell the story of Alberta.

A recent graduate on her team took a photo of the leaves and wrote a computer algorithm to translate the image into a series of spots, which will be cut into the metal cladding of the new downtown museum by local companies Ledcor Group and Dialog Designs, with Toronto-based Lundholm Associates Architects.

Their winning design for the new $340-million museum was announced Wednesday.

Good design for downtown

EDMONTON JOURNAL SEPTEMBER 16, 2011

After construction was completed on Gustave Eiffel's grand entrance to the 1889 Paris Exposition, local newspapers were filled with condemnation of an alleged blight on the City of Light.

One complained that in the years to come, "we shall see stretching out like a black blot the odious shadow of the odious column built up of riveted iron plates."

In a petition, 300 giants of the French cultural scene including Emile Zola, Guy de Maupassant and the son of Alexandre Dumas declared self-importantly: "We, the writers, painters, sculptors, architects and lovers of the beauty of Paris, do protest with all our vigour and all our indignation, in the name of French taste and endangered French art and history, against the useless and monstrous Eiffel Tower."

Think it's a very solid design. Massive improvement for that part of the core.

Please tell me that the Edmonton Journal is not seriously (and with a straight face) comparing this design to the Eiffel Tower?

I just hope they hurry up & get building the thing. The rhetoric surrounding this project is absolutely mind bogging.

While not architectually stunning I think this will be a great addition to the arts district.

How dare they build a multi million dollar cultural facility in downtown in an existing arts district. How dare they welcome thousands of students and tourists from across alberta to our downtown. How dare they tare down a windowless brick box postal distribution centre and turn it into a shiny glass structure with infinately better comunity integration with a link between chinatown and downtown which until now has been physically divided. Let's start a petition to have this development stopped. Its much better suited for the enoch casino site by the new arena! And while we are at it lets start a second petition to have perigrine point added to the list of historicaly important buildings.
