more Spokane, WA

A few from around downtown Spokane.

One of the oldest buildings in Spokane was bulldozed here to make way for a surface parking lot.

Gorgeous building.

Most of the buildings in downtown Spokane date from the 1890-1920 period. Unfortunately many have been lost to surface parking over the years, still many survive.

This would be a fantastic site for a new building. The recently expanded convention center and Riverfront Park are next door.

Riverfront Park

The lower Spokane Falls. The Spokane Arena can be seen across the river on the right. The Kendell Yards project site is to the left of this photo a couple blocks down.

Downtown from the Kendell Yards site.

Spokane River gorge. Downstream from downtown, most of the Spokane River is a designated scenic and recreation area.

Davenport Hotel lobby.

Lots of opportunity for historic renovation in Spokane! They really need to get housing into the upper floors of the old brick buildings all across downtown!

Thanks for checking out good old Spokane, Washington! Peace!

Unfortunately its a case of "looks can be deceiving". PCBs continue to contaminate the river. Fish from the Spokane river is not safe to eat. The EPA's Superfund cleanup in Idaho doesn't address 60 million tons of pollution sediments on the bottom of Lake Coeur d'Alene (The source of the river). The water level of the River is threatened in summer by the metro area drawing too much water from the Aquafier (which shares water with the river). Spokane falls partly dries up in the summer time.

Thanks for the Spokane pics.

But the preservationist comments bother me. Here in Boise, St Mary's Church cut down 4 40' tall healthy Linden trees in order to move their rectory to make way for an expansion. The rectory is really non-descript and now I see they have stripped the entire brick facade off, which was the only thing that made it interesting.

You make is sound like buildings were torn down simply to make parking. Are you sure they weren't torn down because they were run down, energy wasteful and simply no longer economically viable?

Great pics. A city with character.

(And I say screw the parking! build a garage!)

That street is waaaaaaayyyy too wide. And one-way?? It needs to go on a "road diet"

Hello to you, pretty ol' Spokane, twinkling your lights ever so softly in the eastern broads of Washington.
