^^^ Wonder if they hit something? Perhaps they ran into a large glacial erratic?

Or maybe a huge block of concrete with Jimmy Hoffa in the middle of it?

Do the foundation guys ever use ground penetrating radar? I'm not sure how deep that can look. But a big hunk of rock sitting inside the clay layer should show up.

I may be misunderstanding the question, but I thought I remembered someone saying this will have a secant wall. If that's the case, then the cored sections will overlap one another as this appears to be. From the little experience I have with deep foundations, I think those cores are usually done in a "every other one" sort of sequence and then filled in as sequentially required.

Great photos. Truly informative. Really appreciate seeing all of them.

The hole in question is a small borehole, about the size usually used for soil testing, from the angle I'm not sure if it is where one of the secant cores will be, or right next to it.
