There was no business on the lot, at least not that I was aware of (or at least during my lifetime).

The lot was completely empty during most of the year, and was used to sell Christmas trees during the holiday season.

The grocery store has been gone for a LOOONG time (maybe the early 80s?), and they had their own parking lot, outlined in blue. The grocery store building is now a recording studio.

What surprised me about the Russian photo is that the ice machine was facing a public sidewalk & appears to have been situated on the street!

PS: Here is Food Kart in a photo from 1968. Looking east on Magnolia from Clybourn.

I've never done it but I see someone changing the movie marquee sign. It was a nasty dirty job as the letters and sign were covered in pollution dirt and dust....

in your attached picture, there was a produce place, (like a farm stand) located just to the right of the Holt business, and next to the pad of green concrete, seen in your picture on the bottom. They had good produce and good prices and the added benefit of the ice house right there.

Indeed! My mom and I used to buy produce there. But that location changed hands often; one day it would be a produce stand, the next day it would be something different - it was one of those rented-often, changes-hands-often locations...

Has anyone heard of the Harwood Industrial School?

This next photograph isn't nearly as intriguing as the people coming out of the mountain. But it confirms that there was, indeed, a Hardwood Industrial School.

The two 'Harwood' photographs were found on a UMC 'miscellaneous' page along with sheet music & a photograph of the Men's Glee Club from Cornell College. Mt Vernon, Iowa.

The Harwood Industrial School was not in Los Angeles.

Google Books - Forgotten Albuquerque

The second graduating class picture is captioned as Albuquerque in another book. I guess the person who labelled those pictures was just mistaken.

Even though the Harwood Industrial School ended up in Albuquerque, New Mexico (thanks NOIR NOIR)...here's another interesting photograph from the UMC Digital Archives.

UMC......for search purposes: Japanes restuarant on N. San Pedro St. City "Yachiyo" los Angeles Calif.

Has anyone heard of Yachiyo? I take it that's the name of the restaurant (the restaurant appears to be the small shack-like building behind the larger building in the front.
The building at the end of the block appears to be a hotel. (there's a small sign)

You can see it intact in this photo from the same set:

Looks like it says "CENTRAL HOTEL ROOMS 50c"

Downtown sure had a lot of seedy hotels back in the day.

How about the great old shopping district of Magnolia Park back in the day.
Between the Magnolia and California theaters, we had the Pumpkin, Albin's drug store, Newberry's, the Barn (chuck Wagon dinners), the Blarney Stone, Sands Cleaner's, the Safeway and the Vega grocery stores, Ken Keats Television, A&W Root Beer stand and many more liquor stores, beauty shops and cafes.
