I have eaten at that restaurant (it’s called Tavolo for the record) and the food was fantastic. Like a light at the end of the tunnel. A certain type of building tends to attract bowling alleys. The parking lot tends to be a mess (like the Hopedale Mall), awful selection (like the Hopedale Mall), and anchored by a Shoppers (like the Hopedale Mall).

Truly awful. To think an architect got paid to design this. The fakeness and hollowness of the Mansard roofs in this picture is just the icing on the cake.

Hmph! I think it's kind of cool - way more interesting than some block of brick and glass pretending to be 'modern', even though it's just the same technology that's been used for the past 50+ years.

Just don't take it as an exact replica of anything, but rather a variance of architecture with a nod to previous styles.

Of course, nobody will take it that way. I already know this.

To me anyways thats kind of where the problem starts. They've taken traditional architectural elements like quoins, pilasters, and capitals, and catroonized them down into their most ugly basic components, molded them out of styrofoam, and glued them onto a box with no rhyme or reason. Now I'd love to see more "nod[s] to previous styles" but I think it's got to be handled really carefully or else you end up Disneyfied versions of architecture, like this.

I don't disagree, but taken in context for what it is - a glorified strip mall - I don't think it comes across as being all that bad, Disneyfied or not. It's not trying to be authentic, just different, and at least somewhat interesting.

Now, if this was placed in the middle of an historic district and given the job of blending in with surrounding heritage structures, then in my book it would be a huge fail.

Update on the ugly Ches':

They renovated PART of the inside!

Tasteless but funny aside, there's now a memorial picture/plaque there for a guy that notes he ate there every day and was a favourite customer but tragically died aged 44 of colon cancer.

It looks like it has pretty good food. Tacky decor though.

I agree, this could have just been anoth big box mall but as fake and phoney as it is, it has decent street prescence for shoppers.
