Excuse me people, but this thread is about construction of the Carnegie 57. Take the "blight" discussion to the architecture forum.

Another look at that rendering from Portzamparc's website...

In addition to the sheer height of the structure, the base appears somewhat surprisingly wide. You wouldn't expect that of a tower known so far for its slender profile. LOVE IT

Only now are we starting to get an idea of how massive of a tower this will be.

I think this is the most exciting tower rising in NYC right now. I feel like almost no one knows about it, and in a few months its going to make a big impact.

Wow, from the new rendering the north wall (??) is going to be pretty impressive. Looks like it will be straight up - awesome.

Is anyone else a little turned off by the window pattern that looks copy/pasted up the façade? I don't really like the whole "random window" style as it is but the repetition bothers me.

Your feelings are very close to accurate. It's what happens when a tower of this size is being built as-of-right (and by a fairly unknown developer). That means no special or lengthy approvals or messy community board meetings for the press. Only people like us who actually follow skyscraper development are interested. When it reaches as high as it's neighbors - and higher - it'll get noticed for the giant that it is.

^^ i've given up on people noticing skyscraper developments in this city. i mean, there are still a dozen of colleagues i know which have no clue about the current status of the new WTC. and they call themselves educated. shame on them!

and now imagine telling those people about C57!

I also think it's a NY thing to an extent. In that there's just so much else going on, and so many already existing skyscrapers, not many this big, but most people just sort of figure "Oh look another skyscraper, what a shocker."

To get a big more on topic, I have to say that I'm not usually a huge fan of the random pattern used on buildings, but I adore it here. I don't know why. Any chance we start to see cladding sometime in the late summer early fall?

I think there's a good chance it'll be then if not sooner. We're about 13 floors up out of 75, and they're fast approaching if not exceeding a floor a week. By July the building will be about 25 stories high. If they can clad just a little faster than a floor a week, starting in July will let the cladding stay sufficiently behind concrete pouring while still minimizing the construction time of the building.

Ah, but this facade is something IMO that a Manzana Grande skyscraper has been dying to flaunt since window/spandrel treatments like this first became news.
However, I'm not sure I follow you on how you perceive repetition. The randomness plus the small sizes of the facets is just the thing that will make this big boy look like nothing anyone's ever seen before on a sunny day.

What do you think will help them speed up the cladding process?

This building should fit in perfectly with the surrounding cluster of tall thin towers (carnegie hall, metropolitian, cityspire) this area (very underrated) has always been one of my favorites in NY
