City's Future Tallest Residential Building Rising in Midtown
http://ny.curbed.com/archives/2011/0...in_midtown.php

Quote:
Construction started last August on Carnegie 57, the Extell condo/hotel that's planning to be the city's tallest residential building. Photog Will Femia swung by for a look at how construction's progressing. When done, the building will be a 210-room hotel topped by 135 Thomas Juul-Hansen designed condos. The whole thing's expected to be done in 2013. Consider this picture a reminder to schedule a chiropractor visit.

The dead-on horizontal angle of the Central Park picture is a perfect way to see just how much of an effect this will have on the CPS skyline and the entire Midtown skyline. We need to make sure to get a picture at a similar angle when this bitch is topped out

That will be an amazing angle when topped out. But it appears that the "city's tallest residential" title is short lived these days. I'm not sure how long Carnegie will hold the title.

Rearview of City's Tallest Residential Building Revealed

Wednesday, May 18, 2011, by Michael Gross

Quote:
Carnegie 57, the rising condo/hotel that will soon be New York's tallest residential building, sits on an odd and cramped block-through parcel that backs onto West 58th Street, where developer Extell tore down a parking garage, but was unable to buy the adjacent The Park Savoy Hotel and had to settle for what it could get. So the tower's back side has far less street frontage.

Understandably, then--and unlike the Four Seasons Hotel across town--Extell's erection will not offer hotel guests or residents easy rear entry on quiet but slightly grungy 58th, and its rear end has never been shown in any of the renderings of starchitect Christian de Portzamparc. No wonder; it's apparently not going to be pretty. But a tipster has sent us this photo of what appears to be the promised (and apparently five stories tall) ballroom of the Park Hyatt Hotel planned for the big building's little bottom.

It's Curbed. They knew exactly what they were writing and how it would be read. They're all about the snarkiness and innuendos.

Oh those crazy Curbed contributors always finding ways to "sex up" their writing.

If you've followed those blogs at all you obviously know that their favorite noun is porn, preceded by some real estate-related adjective. Examples: "floorplan porn," "condo porn," and "real estate porn" seem to be on heavy rotation.

Anyway, any new photos? Is it still rising a floor or two a week?

According to a poster on WNY, the Wall Street Journal magazine has an ad for Carnegie 57. Can someone scan the image? The tower's website is www.one57.com.

In an *extremely* subtle way, this design resembles Tower Verre as it was first proposed. (i.e. light curves, two major above-ground setbacks, but with this tower having both on the eastward side).

This is a great place to set up a landmark grand-footer. It should've been done 20 years ago with the last great skyscraper boom. Had Trump gone for something this tall and innovative in this exact spot instead of a 668' 3-D Tetris block on Fifth Avenue, he would've sealed legend status forever.

Are they seriously considering this a landmark? This building looks sexy but I don't think it should be ever called a landmark. It would have to be something much bigger and grander to be called a landmark in my opinion. I still love this building though and I'll keep my mind open until near completion.

They're not considering landmarking it. They're just throwing the word as an advertising scheme. They probably need to put up higher numbers to land financing

I hope that darker color glass isn't spandrel. If it is I might just blow another gasket about the state of architecture of this city.

Is the upper part of the main tower facing the Park an open space? I thought it was going to be vertical slatting. Not sure how I'd feel about having an open space there instead. It would still be a great tower, but...
