so what if it has some distance i'd ride a boat from new west to there would be fun

Thanks. I thought those were the Larco lands, looks like I was wrong, infact I never even heard about these plans. I still wish they developed the Pier lands and built a promenade. I just dont see a stand alone park being a good fit.

My little idea would be to build a giant barge with the surfaced being used for fields and public space. This would be permanently secured next to the waterfront and would create park space without taking away land or needing to reclaim land while allowing residential developments that are much needed in the downtown core.

I cant see this costing too much as it would be like a pontoon bridge that doesnt need to hold as much weight. What could you build for the same price this will cost, plus the cost of land, and potential tax base lost? I wonder.

Seems like similar things have been done.

Obviously Im only thinking of a few fields for soccer, baseball, and open space.

Infact while we are at it why not also do something similar near coal harbour, in false creek, or english bay to increase parks space, sports facility space, and just open public space near downtown Vancouver. Compared to the money they are spending on little pieces of land they could get a lot more bang for their buck, and it would be pretty cool, and think of the sunlight the spaces/floating structures would get.

Completely forgot about the open house.

Regardless, here is what the city has on it: http://www.newwestcity.ca/business/p...rticles213.php

I am sure that more will be posted soon.

I don't think the rail tracks will be moved anytime soon since the south portion of the Port of Metro Vancouver needs the train companies.

Is it possible to move the train tracks underground? Or possibly do what Toronto did and be creative regarding the rail tracks and build over them or something.

Going to have a connection to Sapperton Landing? That would be great. I am not sure how they are going to achieve this though.

Wow! They are hauling ass! I read in some council minutes that there was a remediation issue and costs may rise because they havent yet found the source of the contamination. Good to see that the pilings are continuing along with the reinforcement of the banks, however.

Anybody have any idea why they aren't using concrete pilings? Is this because of the softness of the riverbed?

I'm wondering that myself. I mean how long do wooden pilings actually last?

Thanks for the photos. I was wondering how this was progressing. I must admit that even with the benefit of the rendering I still cannot picture how it will look upon completion and how it will connect to the geometry of the street grid and blocks in the neighbourhood.

Some updates (photo-less) on progress from council minutes:
*Construction has been contracted to Wilco Landscaping, who did the SEFC seawall work in and around the Olympic Village.
*Chlorinated solvents were found in the site (40-50ft below the surface), and instead of remediating it, the city is choosing to put a concrete barrier over it.
*Pile driving will be done by the end of April.
*The park will be done by Oct. 31st, 2011
*Concrete deck components will be precast and laid from the water

2 photos at the end of the document here: http://www.newwestcity.ca/council_mi...0report%20.pdf

There are many renderings here: http://www.newwestcity.ca/database/r...ov_29_2010.pdf

This should be changed to "Under Construction"

This park is going to be friggin awesome for New West. I can only hope once more people start going down to the waterfront/the Quay, they will FINALLY demolish that damn parking garage, bury the train tracks(tunnel) and build a tower or two! Would be cool to convert Front Street into a retail street like Columbia, just on the water. It could be really really nice actually.

Actually, I feel that waterfront parkade should be kept, if only converted into something else. Do something creative with it since it's the only thing of it's kind in the region.
