Interesting Free Press feature on historic pillars and gates around Winnipeg. Quite a few that I didn't know about.

Would be nice to restore the street edge along Main in front of the Pantages...

Aren't they putting a Noam Gonick tipped-over streetcar sculpture there to commemorate 100th anniversary of the 1919 strike?

The Civic Centre/PSB complex is even more horrific from the air than it is from the ground. It really looks like something in pre-1990s Novosibirsk that would house the local politburo and KGB. Perhaps it should be fenced in with barbed wire.

Oh geez, I forgot about that. So there goes any chance of having a proper building on that site built right up to the corner.

There is still a good amount of room on site for a building to go (approx 9-10,000 sq ft). It is just the corner that will be reserved for the sculpture. I am hoping for a nice 6-8 storey condo building to compliment/contrast with the Confederation Building.

That would be the ideal, IMO. I would like to see something equal to Confed in height (so maybe around 12 storeys, with 2 floors of commercial at the base with 10 storeys of condo), but shorter would be OK too.

That is a site where quality design should be a key consideration. I have no problem with relatively cheap filler buildings like 98 Market when they're shunted off to sites with little prominence, but Market and Main should be a cut above that level.

I'm not saying it should necessarily look like this building, but it should have the elegant, high quality feel that 700 Sussex projects:

Just for comparison, both 390 on the River and Alt Hotel tower have floor plates just over 6,000 sq ft and Tower 2 at TNS in around 10,000 sq ft. So you could put a nice sized building in the 9,000ish sq ft area remaining on the site leaving room for the sculpture....you could even cantilever!

The best part of this memorial is that the goons that tried to tip over the streetcar in 1919 (because nothing says 'stick it to the elites' like destroying a public transportation vehicle?) didn't even succeed in tipping it all the way over.

pfft. Look at the back-span available on that sideways skyscraper. That's beginner level cantilever.

Uh, wouldn’t the best part of the memorial rather be to memorialize an historic event, the struggle that was going on between different opposing groups in society in early part of the twentieth century? It is based on a historic photo, it’s a symbol.
