The WUSTL School of Medicine announced a new project today. This is in addition to Phase I plans slated for WU/BJC North campus expansion.

Washington University School of Medicine announces plans for new $75-million research building
June 19, 2013
By Jim Dryden

Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis plans to construct an energy-efficient, multistory research building dedicated to interdisciplinary research on some of the most complex problems in human biology.

Positioned along McKinley Avenue just west of Taylor Avenue, the six-story building eventually will house 138,000 square feet of highly flexible, open laboratories. The site is currently a surface parking lot. School of Medicine employees who park there and on another lot along McKinley Avenue are being notified about alternate parking options on campus.

“We envision this new research building as another key, strategic improvement to our campus that will house cutting-edge research labs devoted to advancing innovation and human health, and we are committed to creating spaces that facilitate this important work and that position us to compete successfully for future research support,” said Larry J. Shapiro, MD, executive vice chancellor for medical affairs and dean of the School of Medicine. “These are economically challenging times for the support of science, yet the opportunities for innovation and advances never have been greater for those institutions that continue to invest in the future.”

Planners expect to break ground on the $75 million facility this summer with a June 2015 target date for completion.

Researchers slated to work in the building include those involved in genetics, genomics and regenerative biology. The building will house labs from the Department of Genetics, the Center for Genome Sciences & Systems Biology (the first BioMed 21 interdisciplinary center, established in 2004), the Department of Medicine and the Department of Developmental Biology.

The new building adds much-needed laboratory space to the campus. The BJC Institute of Health Building, completed in 2010, added 240,000 square feet of research space, but that space is now occupied. The new building also replaces older, less efficient research space with new, highly flexible space that can accommodate new research teams and interdisciplinary research.

Express Scripts planning to add 1,500 in north St. Louis County
1 hour ago • By Tim Logan
St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Express Scripts' sprawling north St. Louis County campus along both sides of I-70.

One of St. Louis' biggest companies is about to get a lot bigger.

Express Scripts is poised to add 1,500 jobs over the next five years in a $56 million expansion of its campus in north St. Louis County. The pharmacy benefit manager is planning to add a new 220,000 square-foot building in NorthPark.

A company spokesman said the move is designed to help accommodate the $93 billion company's continued growth, and that it will help them manage a growing roster of patients.

“We're responsible for 100 million Americans now. That means adding people and facilities,” said spokesman Brian Henry. “As we've grown we just need more office space.”

Henry said the deal is contingent on state and local tax incentives, and the company's ongoing due diligence. But, he said, if all goes according to plan, construction will start later this year.

A spokeswoman for the St. Louis County Economic Council said the jobs would pay an average of $65,000 a year and that an incentive package would be introduced to the County Council next week.

The new $160-million East Wing of the St. Louis Art Museum is scheduled to open June 29-30, 2013. The entire Museum has been closed since June 17 for final preparations for the Grand Opening Celebration on June 29–30.

The 211,431-square-foot East Building will be used primarily to showcase modern and contemporary art.

Here's a 360 panoramic view of the SLAM (St. Louis Art Museum) complex from Art Hill in Forest Park.

You can also go on a tour of the very nice East Wing galleries. In addition to new gallery space, the East Building will also feature a 100-seat restaurant called Panorama and a 60-seat cafe, which overlook Forest Park.

To me, it's a beautiful simple addition that makes a big statement. A gaudy over-the-top building isn't necessary to showcase fine pieces of art. For a change, I like this conservative approach. This is a HUGE, timeless addition. Plus, I like the natural light elements inside of the new wing and how the new wing doesn't compete with the Cass from the Grand Basin.

A few of the new galleries:
-The New York School
-Art in Cologne
-Abstraction in the 80's
-Dusseldorf School of Photography
-Neo Expressionism
-Pop Art
-Surrealism in New York
-Post War German Art

....just to name a few.

The Central Corridor is experiencing a new resurgence with new attractions, planned medical and research facilities, housing, retail and restaurants. Recently, Whole Foods and Lululemon announced plans to put stores in the Central West End (CWE). An IKEA is rumored for the CWE.

Recently, the trendy Central Table Food Hall, a massive 10,000-square-foot food hall with sit-down and takeout options that include tapas and flatbreads; craft beer and wine; sushi and other raw foods; a seasonal grill; upscale coffee, tea and chocolate; sandwiches, soups and salads; charcuterie and more opened in the Central West End in May.

With seating for more than 200 people, free Wi-Fi and easy to-go options, Central Table is modeled after food emporiums like Eataly in New York and Umamicatessen in Los Angeles.

Below is a larger rendering of Washington University's new research facility (designed by Christner, Inc.), which is being built on a medical center parking lot. Once this project starts, there will be nearly $310-million in health, research and tech projects under way in the Central Corridor with more to come.

Washington University To Build New Research Facility

The Opus Group is proposing an 8-story, 177-unit building for the northeast corner of Lindell Boulevard and Euclid Avenue in the city’s Central West End neighborhood. (Google Streetview)

The proposal includes more than 11,000 square feet of retail space.

The proposal has yet to receive city approval, but given past experience, Opus is unlikely to have proceeded to this point without predicting success.

As downtown St. Louis continues to add tech jobs, the growing firm ShipWorks is yet another tech company that is putting its name atop a downtown St. Louis structure.

Tri-Star Mercedes Benz is moving east from West St. Louis County to St. Louis City. A newly-constructed building will be located near Forest Park on Hampton and Berthold @ I-64. The luxury car dealer will bring with it 60 employees and the first luxury car brand to be within St. Louis City limits in 20 years.

The 3.2 acre site is the former home of KTVI/FOX 2 News and has sat vacant for approximately four years. Making a great re-use of the site, Tri-Star will be constructing a 45,000 square foot Mercedes-Benz dealership with showroom, as well as, a service area and approximately 380 parking spaces. The project cost is $13.2 million dollars with Tri-Star receiving a $2.3 million Tax Increment Financing (TIF).

Cortona @ Forest Park is topped-out. This 276-unit residential luxury complex is going up next to the Mercedes-Benz of St. Louis dealership (see above), which is also under construction. In this part of town, about 800-units are either under construction, near completion or proposed.

I have to agree that it would look really cool but ultimately the city does need more 400ft-600ft infill towers instead of that. Balance is what matters.

Here are earlier sketches of Chesterfield Blue Valley - a $300-million modern prairie development in suburban Chesterfield that will feature shopping, offices and hotels 25 miles west of downtown St. Louis. The first phase is Simon Properties' St. Louis Premium Outlet Mall, where 800 jobs are now available.

See video on Chesterfield Blue Valley.

Here is an update on St. Louis' dueling outlet malls located in Chesterfield. Both are still under construction two miles apart from one another.

It's kind of shocking to see such an asinine land use such as these being championed in this era, on this site. You seem to report on these developments from an economic development point of view. Are we supposed to look the other way in regards to the form these horrendous suburban commercial developments take? Great 800 new living-wage free jobs... At what cost? Draining neighboring retail districts of vitality? Increased traffic and pollution? Encouraging even more thoughtless development further into the hinterlands, guaranteed to never be accessed by anything but the private auto?

#1. Those outlet malls are developments and this is a development thread so I am reporting on them.
#2. You are entitled to your opinion, but I am entitled to post on developments in metro St. Louis that are within forum rules.
#3. If you don't like the developments, it's your prerogative. I would have preferred a more urban setting, even downtown St. Louis, but it is what it is.
#4. Where you are not enthused, others may be interested even if only somewhat interested. Nonetheless, sprawling suburban developments are posted on this forum regularly.
#5. I am not a member of the Chesterfield City Council so take up your concerns with them, the developers, the Sierra Club etc.
#6. Like you, I don't live in Chesterfield, but I know people who do live Chesterfield and most are okay with the developments. Whether one likes it or not, Chesterfield has the right to develop its community - just as your community and neighborhood does - as long as the development is within state and federal laws.
#7. What I am "championing" is access to new stores and the creation of 1500-1600 jobs to be created by both centers. Again, it is what it is.
#8. There will be little-to-no cannibalization from other outlet retail centers. These are outlets. There's only two other outlets in metro St. Louis - one is severely aged and needs to go, the other is in a whole different region of St. Louis county.
#9. Public transportation goes to Chesterfield.

Updated renderings for Monsanto's $400-million Chesterfield Research Campus expansion.

Monsanto plans to add 36 new greenhouses, additional offices and laboratory space as well as additional plant growth chambers to facilitate development of its seed and trait pipeline. Plans include greenhouses and plant growth chambers, which can be programmed to represent any climate around the world. In addition to the new office and research space, the company plans to add a new cafeteria for employees, a conference center and a parking structure.

Today, the site comprises 1.5 million-square-feet and includes approximately 250 laboratories, 122 plant growth chambers and two acres of greenhouses. The new expansion will take the Chesterfield Research Campus to over 2-million square feet.

The company plans to begin work this summer and expects to add 675 jobs across St. Louis County over the next three years. In addition to the Chesterfield Research Campus, Monsanto has a 150-acre corporate campus in suburban Creve Coeur that is almost 1.5-million square feet.

There are a lot of new museum attractions either planned, under construction or recently finished in St. Louis - mostly downtown. Cool videos and renderings below.

St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame and Museum
Location: Downtown St. Louis - Possibly Union Station area
Cost: $25-million
Projected Opening: Planned
Website: St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame

The St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame is working to expand from a display of items at Scottrade Center to a three-level museum downtown, possibly at Union Station. Greg Marecek, a longtime St. Louis sports figure, heads the hall of fame and is leading the effort to raise the $25 million needed to build and endow the museum. John Mueller, JEMA’s managing partner, said the museum, if built on the proposed Union Station site south of the train shed, would be visible from Highway 40 (Interstate 64).

Museum of Westward Expansion (Upgrade) (Video Fly-Through)
Location: Gateway Arch
Cost: Part of an overall $700-million metro parks plan
Opening: 2015
Website: CityArchRiver 2015

Fly-through starts at about the 1:43 mark.

The park service and City-ArchRiver have selected UK-based Haley Sharpe Design to create the new exhibits. Headquartered in England, the firm has offices across the globe and has already completed NPS projects as well as Stonehenge Visitors Center, Royal Ontario Museum and Dubai Maritime Museum.

Design director Bill Haley and content manager Nicole Mackereth were in St. Louis to start what will be the multiyear process of researching, designing and building the new exhibits. It's too soon to say what the exhibits will look like or when they will open, though Bradley certainly hopes by October 2015, the 50th anniversary of the Gateway Arch.

St. Louis Art Museum (SLAM)
Cost: $160-million East Wing expansion
Architect: Brit, David Chipperfield
Opened: July 3rd, 2013
Website: SLAM

The London Financial Times says of the new East Wing's expansion, "The museum's new building is a gem of clarity and deceptive simplicity. There's no attempt to compete with Gilbert's structure, no desire to create a new, self-conscious monument (as so many mid-western and western US museums have done in recent years). Instead there is an elegant gallery that appears to care as much about the art as it does about the architecture."
