i completely agree. this new type or achitecture will be bashed in 30 years time as well. i prefer the current old facade myself. it just needs to be fixed up, repainted, etc. im just not one for the weird angles and the 'shards of glass' look in buildings.

edit* but i will add, that the inside willbe much nicer with the natural sunlight from the new design. so who knows.

Rather than going all out brutalist-slab-of-concrete (think: nearby Millenium Centre), it goes soft on you. those penthouses on top. those spires. It's the worst kind of PoMo imaginable.

I have to disagree. This is a pretty amazing structure. Perhaps it isn't good looking at all, but it is a significant building for it's architecture, and the the underlying concept.

On a bit of a lesser scale, this apartment in Calgary's inner-city has a probably the worst view ever and the building looks like it's turned sideways. On the right, out of the picture, a low-rise office building is situated right up against the building.

I've always felt sorry for whoever lives here.

Saskatoons best example. Sturdy Stone Centre. There is parking above the ground floor 3-4 levels. Then offices above.

You are right about the Minneapolis complex...Mary Tyler Moore did live there!! It was built as a mixed development and then tended to become more geared toward lower income people and now is a huge mecca for immigrants.

On a side note...the architect behind the complex is Ralph Rapson, who is still alive today (age 92 and still practicing), is the chair of the Architecture Department at University of Minnesota and has the Architecture school named for him.

He did design the original Guthrie Theatre:

Which is being torn down soon to expand the sculpture gardens...

Believe it or not the Mercer is new, and they plan on building a twin. It's in Houston.
