A third bridge, strange... Evertime Ive been through Memphis theres barely ever any traffic on the main bridge, seems kinda excessive. Theres nothing really on the Arkansas side, except West Memphis, which is pretty small. I dont know though, is there a lot of commuter traffic from West Memphis to Memphis in the morning and evening?

It might be to take some of the traffic off of the I-55 bridge. The Hernando-Desoto (I-40) Bridge is in good same and has been retrofitted for earthquakes, but a study was done on the I-55 bridge and it was found that it would be cheaper to build a new bridge rather than to retrofit the existing one. This 3rd bridge could have something to do with that but I can't be sure. I've never seen much traffic on the I-40 bridge, but its 3 lanes on each side, the I-55 bridge is only two lanes on each side, and those two lanes are pretty narrow.

Sorry I don't have a link for the study that was done, it was on a movie that I watched in on of my structures classes in architecture school, but I'm pretty sure the original documentary aired on Discovery or History.

'Community' being planned for Piperton
Expansive multimillion-dollar project relies on rail yard
The Commercial Appeal

"Eventually, after about 12 years, the project should include more than 5,000 homes and condominiums ranging in price from less than $200,000 to more than $1 million, Adair said. His plans also envision green space, a riverwalk flowing between two lakes, shopping centers."

"the Memphis & Arkansas Bridge carrying Interstate 55 was built in 1949 and the Hernando DeSoto Bridge for Interstate 40 opened in 1973. Transportation officials say the highway spans, in particular, handle heavy traffic volumes -- each of them carrying nearly 50,000 vehicles daily"

"The I-55/40 interchange (in West Memphis) is one of the highest-volume truck and busiest interchanges in the country"

Span plan: Group works to open Harahan Bridge boardwalk
The Commercial Appeal

"Melton Holt looks forward to the day he'll be able to drive down to the Mississippi River, get out of his car and stroll or ride a bicycle on a boardwalk over the river while enjoying stunning vistas of Downtown Memphis."

The Greater Memphis Greenline has enlisted support for a project that would repurpose the former automobile lanes of the Harahan Bridge as a pedestrian boardwalk over the Mississippi River between Memphis and Arkansas.

Courtesy Memphis/Shelby County Public Library & Information Center

The Harahan span was built in 1916 with roadways extending outward from either side of the main span to carry carriages, wagons and motor vehicles. The Greater Memphis Greenline members say the boardwalk would be built only on the north side of the bridge, which faces Downtown.

Southern Avenue Charter School relocates, plans further expansion
Memphis Business Journal

"Southern Avenue Charter School of Academic Excellence and Creative Arts will host a grand opening at its new 24,000-square-foot facility at 2221 Democrat Road. The school invested $600,000 in renovations at Nonconnah Business Center Park to create 12 classrooms, a computer lab, a music lab, a science lab, a music room and library."

"The grand opening also kicks off a capital campaign for Southern Avenue Charter Middle School. The middle school opened in fall 2010 at Greenwood CME Church, but renovations already are starting at 2185 Democrat Road next to the elementary school. Evans says the middle school should be able to move into that facility at Nonconnah in fall 2011. The school plans to raise $500,000 for that renovation project."
