Relax, regular 'tourist' visas have been on the cards for a while. Should be available sometime this year, 2018, for anyone to visit. The only restriction that I imagine will remain is non-Muslims will not be allowed in Makkah where the Abraj al Bait Clock Tower is.

Update on Saudi city of Jeddah

"As of late 2017, the tower was 252 meters high and already had broad views of the kingdom, according to CNN, which released a video capturing the construction site last week. Based in Jeddah Economic City, the Jeddah Tower is planned to stand at 1,000 meters, surpassing the world's current tallest tower, Dubai's Burj Khalifa, by 72 meters. This comes as part of the Jeddah Economic City project, a commercial and residential project that will feature homes, hotels, offices, along with touristic sites."

Let's see... 1,000 meters is 72 more than 828 meters. Makes sense to me.

The February 2018 update has this tower at 26% core completion. At 66 floors with the core an 60 floors at the wings and currently standing at 872 feet. It appears both primary financial backers were wrapped up in that corruption sweep including the Bin Laden company. The wings have progressed 3 floors this month but the core has not moved much at all.

Looks like they were working on about the 63rd floor in the latest photo?

Interesting... I did not know that.

Shockingly so but not unprecedented. Canary Wharf and London City are the classic examples of the nation's tallest building and what is world's busiest STOLport are literally seconds apart while landing there... Just go to Youtube for some wicked landing videos...

It's probably because it is so close to the airport they can build so high. It's out of the direct runway path but close enough to it that would ensure as tower could either be as tall as as humanly possible or limited due to the glideslope of the runway....

Either way, I am excited to see the tower's completion and also to see where MBS takes the nation next, especially when it comes to NEOM... Aka the Saudi Arabian Dubai in planning...

I feel like the fact that almost every Mid East country except Iran has so many skyscrapers under construction says something. I don't mean any disrespect but it shows that Iran is choosing to live in traditional old school ways while Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, and even Iraq are choosing to adapt to the 21st century. Erbil has skyscrapers now. Meanwhile Iran's mid-rise buildings are collapsing from fires that were less than 25% as big as the ones in the Twin Towers.

Don't conflate building size or architecture with modernity.

Yeah... I mean we are talking in relative terms here but you could make a fairly convincing argument for Iran being the most progressive / modern of those states. In any event much more so than Saudi Arabia.

Folks... head over to the "other" Skyscraper site (SSC) and note that this tower is currently "on hold"... and it looks increasingly likely it will stall out where it is and never be completed.

OR check out San Paulo in Brazil. Its domestic airport is completely surrounded by high rises and pilot fly down a narrow corridor where they are below the height of the surrounding buildings. look at google maps to get the real feel... Insane if you ask me

CTBUH Skyscraper Center lists it as still under construction, with a 2021 completion date.

Although aren't they often overly optimistic about these things? I do hope it is completed personally, of course.

I'm sure it will eventually be completed, the money is still all there - its simply that some of the players became targets in the purge as MbS consolidates his power. They are busy reorganizing duties and monies and I cannot imagine will allow such an iconic tower to become an embarrassment for too long. This whole episode is actually something common throughout history in absolute monarchies. Anyway, Wikipedia has a handy article on the situation: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017..._Arabian_purge

I was talking about this site:
https://www.skyscrapercity.com/showt...25819&page=920

A much more lively conversation regarding it's status has been going on all year... Definitely on full hold.
