Smile NEW YORK | 200 Greenwich - 2 WTC | 1,270 FT | 80 FLOORS | ON HOLD

Tower 2

NEW YORK TIMES-Dave Dunlap

Lord Foster’s Tower 2, with a rooftop of four enormous diamonds steeply inclined toward the memorial below, would be as high as the Empire State Building. Tower 3 by Lord Rogers, framed boldly by an exoskeletal framework of diagonal beams, would reach a pinnacle of 1,255 feet at its corner antennas. Even the smallest and subtlest building among them, Mr. Maki’s Tower 4, would be taller than the Citigroup Center in midtown

and

By virtue of its size and aesthetic bravura, Lord Foster’s Tower 2 at 200 Greenwich Street, between Vesey and Fulton Streets, may draw the most public attention. The 1,265-foot building is to have 78 floors, 62 for offices, four trading floors and the rest for retail and mechanical space. The uppermost of the rooftop diamonds will be a tripod shaped antenna whose pinnacle is 1,350 feet above street level, just 18 feet shy of the Freedom Tower’s parapet.

Construction of Tower 2 will require the removal of the Vesey Street staircase, also known as the survivors’ stairway, which is the only aboveground remnant of the original trade center that is still in place. It served as an escape route for hundreds of people on 9/11.

The main shaft of Tower 2 is to be divided by notches into quadrants, culminating in diamond forms that are meant to lead the eye down to the memorial plaza. The surface of these structures will be a porous screen on which snow and ice are not expected to accumulate; always a hazard on a steeply pitched roof.

Great pics!!

The top of Tower 2 still loks a bit reminiscent of Foster's previous design for
Ground Zero.

Cool, cool, cool! Now this is great modern architecture. And the top floor where people can go to is at 1265 feet. I love the windows on the slanted windows at the top!

This tower is so incredibly beautiful. I really don't think there is a more beautiful proposal out there right now. Hopefully Silverstien comes through and does the rendering justice with high-quality materials.

Now is it artistic liberties on the renders or is the building's color really going to change from bottom to top? Because ive noticed it in every render but they don't do it to tower 3 or 1 inthe group shots so it might not be shadow. i dont know.

I've noticed that as well. I have to believe there will be a gradual color change for the same reason you mentioned. It's gonna be nice.

Its the best piece of architecture at the WTC IMO but it just doesn't work with the other towers. It'd be better off somewhere else.

Update on some of the plans...

Quote:
at Silverstein's offices over ground zero, where architects for his three towers work together on one floor, looking at a digital clock ticking off the days, minutes and seconds until the next planning deadline.....More detailed drawings were completed this month; they include ideas like sleek fins on the outside of Norman Foster's tower to control the light, a black marble wall inside Fumihiko Maki's tower and a huge, airy lobby with a video installation inside Richard Rogers' tower.

Janno Lieber, who heads the trade center project for Silverstein, said his team will be ready to build by January, when the Port Authority must deliver buildable land at ground zero or pay penalties of $300,000 a day.

Defantly my favorite. I like the whole idea of the Tower, it will defantly stand out from the rest of the towers. THIS should have been the Freedom Tower.

Defantly a big building, You'd think the ESB would be much taller.

I'm beginning to feel the same way. At first the novelty of Foster's design was blinding, but now it seems obvious to me that the tower does not fit in with the rest of the complex. I'll still be happy to see it built though.
