TIANJIN | China 117 Tower | 1,957 FT / 597 M | 117 FLOORS | U/C

It's hard to believe how supertalls pop up out of nowhere in China and this one will be even China's tallest building when completed - 78m higher than SWFC.

Height: 570m / 1870ft
Floors: 117
Location: Huayuan Industry Park, Tianjin
Investor: Matsunichi Hi-Tech Ltd

Ground-breaking ceremony on 12th December 2007:

And some recent u/c photos from Clashman from SSC:

Go Tianjin!
It looks like 2IFC with a flamboyant hat.

SSC has had a thread about this for a while, but it didn't seem as though a terrible amount of work was getting done.

Anyone else see a similarity?

Maybe I've watched LOTR too many times.

I wonder how this impressive tower ended up being build in Tianjin... I was in Tianjin in 1997 and again in 2006, and the city still looks the same. Not many serious highrises. The only really high structure is that tv tower. But we see the same developement in other provincial cities. Guangzhou, Chongqing, Chengdu, etc all seem to get very talls or super talls nowadays. Still I rather see this building added to the Shanghai skyline.

What Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen and Guangzhou has been doing for the last ten years is now being repeated by the "second tier" cities like Tianjin, Chengdu, Shenyang and Chongqing, which are simply playing catchup.
Nothing strange about this at all.

Crazy. So, since this looks like it is rising, it will easily be the tallest in China, and top 5 or so the world when complete. Astonishing. This sure came out of nowhere.

Amazing how these projects kepp coming in China. The only shame is that it isn't being built in Shanghai or HK where there are other supertalls to accompany it. This will be like the Taipei tower where it sticks out in the middle of nowhere.

Wow, hadn't even heard about this tower. Is it REALLY U/C? Or will it be like SWFC where they dig a whole and cancel the project?

It doesn't seem to get much attention for the size. The design is kind of simple and it's ok but it's HUGE!

Wow that tower is incredible and it looks so freakin high. I like it better than the Burj Dubai, its pretty sleek looking. Tianjin, thats an odd place for it though.

^Not really. Beijing and Tianjin are a few years away from becoming a mega-region. The speed train is almost complete which puts each city center a mere 15 minutes away from each other. Tianjin is also one of China's major port cities.

Looking at this again, I'm wondering what sort of effect those fins will have on wind dynamics. Seems to me those things would catch wind like crazy. I'll be interested to see what sort of damper this building employs.
