It's interesting to contrast this lobby with 1WTC. Vanderbilt's lobby is engaging, transparent, floating - 1WTC's lobby is fortress-like. It kind of signals a new era in a way.

WTC site is an exception in terms of security and an almost draconian appeal to it. Its one of the few exceptions along with Wall Street and the surrounding towers (with the bollards, street closure, ect.).

Most of the newer towers will not have that level of security in mind. Due to the high profile nature, history, and risk, those measures are in place for particular sites.

The FT lobby is what it is for obvious reasons. You could contrast it with the lobbies of 4 and 3 WTC.

Okay, yes 4WTC in particular is also very open, floating, and transparent. I guess 1WTC does have a unique history that doesn't really permit an open lobby.

Vanderbilt's lobby is also the exit/entrance for the extension to Grand Central Terminal so its purpose is radically different than 1 WTC in the first place.

Yes, but only on the northeast corner. The Freedom Tower is unique in the design and reasoning of it's base. You don't see any of the many new office towers going up in the city designed with "bunkerlike" bases. But of course, most don't sit on a highway.

From today's cam:

What "Highway"???

Yes its called the "West Side Highway" but that's just hyperbole talking. Its just another road in the city IMHO.

That's not hyperbole talking, it is a highway. Even though they redesigned it somewhat to look closer to a boulevard, it is still a highway that requires pedestrian bridges or tunnels to cross (despite the presence of crosswalks). It still retains it's limited access, thus functioning more like a highway. There's a reason they didn't build tunnels or bridges across Fifth Avenue.

There is something said about symmetry it’s simply beautiful.. I’m not a fan of all the buildings with asyymtery and angles., this building, the Hudson yards main building.. thnk it’s rather gimmicky.. feel the same way about spires.. thnk it should complement the building not act as an after thought.. boa building, nyt building all have spires that just don’t work.

Not to continue your off topic angle on "spires", but symmetry has its place, which isn't everywhere, all the time. That would make for a simply boring skyline. There's a reason the NY skyline is known around the world, and it's not because everything is the same. It's why you can get a "plain" looking building like 432 Park, and it's ok.

But I'll speak specifically to the BofA, since it's very similar in style to what we're getting here. Say what you want, but it's the buildings like these that make a skyline more remarkable than not.

I'm looking forward to more of this in One Vanderbilt.

Walking by this morning, I had a quick chat with some surveyors who said they have about two more weeks of welding work to solidify all of those crazy junctions on the 6th floor. Paraphrasing: "They have some huge welds there [holding hands about 5" apart]. Then again between [floors] 12 and 13, and then, up!"

If this is even possible, This building looks better than Kate Upton running on the beach in a thong!

I love the huge Cyclops window on the eastern facade.

In earlier renders I always thought it was some kind of giant screen, like you see in Times Square.

But yeah, the design at the top grows on you. Keep in mind that this particular model doesn't give exact details.

It just occurred to me....

In just as much the same manner as 53W53/TVerre is giving off a Hancock Toweresque vibe, I'm now getting the same feeling when doing a compare/contrast with the Transamerica Pyramid in SF.

What think ye?

I'm guessing the level at the top of the building where all the trees are is the observation deck.

And those huge windows on the eastern side facing Grand Central, does anyone know if this will be accessible to the public?
