This has to be the strangest skyscraper I've ever seen. Very interesting though. My first reaction was "WTF am I seeing?"

^ Are they building it out of Lego?

Joking aside, I'm actually not clear on what's happening in that photo. I see shoring rigs doing their thing, but what's going on in the centre of the site?

^ It's likely the remnants of soil testing on top of what appears to be the core. Sometimes they will test loads on the soil to determine how much the ground will sink, and it helps them engineer the foundation to account for that.

That may very well be the starting of piling for a secant wall. Sometimes when they drill for a secant wall they use foam spacers to help mock up where the piles are going to be.

Taking a Closer Look at Australia 108

Quote:
Some of Melbourne's largest projects are now reaching the construction stage, escaping the wrath of recent planning rules in the central business district that would have capped the height of multiple towers if they'd been planned today. The 317-metre Australia 108 will become the tallest apartment building in the southern hemisphere, an achievement that would not be possible under current planning rules.

I didn't realize that there were historic facades being restored and integrated into the project.

And this one has been pipped with the approval today of a taller tower- One Queensbridge Street https://urban.melbourne/development/...treet-approved 323m - or 1059-1060 feet if you still work on the old money measurement scale.
