A couple of articles from the Ithaca Times.

The first involves a public meeting for a fairly large (for Ithaca) proposed mixed use development. Th Nimbys were out in force:

https://www.ithaca.com/news/ithaca/r...788d7ffae.html

The next is an example of the support the artist community gets in Ithaca:

Now for some recent entries at the Ithacating blog.

First covers real estate and infill, renovating a downtown parking garage, renovation of an old Catholic school, new murals for the city, and an update on the Chain Works district.

https://ithacating.com/2019/04/10/news-tidbits-4-9-19/

Next is includes a possible new office building for Tompkins County, a major development for an old business park, affordable housing in suburban Trumansburg, Tax abatements, a Collegetown project, suburban auto dealer, and another mention of the Catholic school redevelopment.

https://ithacating.com/2019/04/12/news-tidbits-4-11-19/

Finally another mention of the artists space mentioned in the post above, a possible high end housing development in the suburbs, sprucing up Collegetown, and a possible site for more development in the West End.

it's eerie how similar Ithaca and Boise are in terms of vibe. full of NIMBYs and artists. no wonder an Ithaca developer is looking at projects in Boise.

when I saw the article about Artists Alley, I immediately thought of Freak Alley in Boise.

Good point, though Boise is a lot larger.

Some info about current residents upset with a project on South Hill near Ithaca College (from the Ithaca Times):

https://www.ithaca.com/news/ithaca/p...72727d003.html

Now on to some better news from the Ithaca Voice.

Some Ithacating blog entries about current projects. There's plenty more pics and info in the links.

First is a housing project on Inlet Isle. It's expensive rental, but does have a waterfront location:

https://ithacating.com/2019/06/02/32...update-5-2019/

Next is an affordable housing new construction (infill) a few blocks away from the Commons:

https://ithacating.com/2019/06/23/32...update-6-2019/

Now on to some of the bigger projects downtown.

The new Hilton Canopy Hotel is nearing completion:

https://ithacating.com/2019/06/19/hi...update-6-2019/

Close by is City Centre also nearing completion. It's a large (by Ithaca standards) apartment building with ground floor retail:

https://ithacating.com/2019/06/18/ci...update-6-2019/

Finally, after some starting/stopping issues, Harold's Square (mixed use) will soon be the tallest in downtown:

https://ithacating.com/2019/06/20/ha...update-6-2019/

Update from the Ithaca Times regarding the renovation of the Bank Tower building in downtown Ithaca:

https://www.ithaca.com/news/ithaca/t...ff613b9dc.html

Picture of the building from the Ithacating blog:

Now for a bit of a surprise. Rimland has decided to move forward with a new apartment building on the eastern third of the Green Street garage site (from the Ithaca Voice):

https://ithacavoice.com/2019/06/riml...ower-downtown/

Some more info and renderings in the links in the article. This could be a really long process, and the responses on Facebook are mostly negative, but that's not unusual for development proposals in Ithaca.

In the drawing the new building is next to the red bricked Marriott. The tall at the other end of the garage is the Harold's Square building under construction now.

A lot of info in this one.

From the Ithaca Times an article ref: potential expansion of the Commons and other projects related to improving downtown (including a safe injection site) if the city receives a $10 million grant from the state:

https://www.ithaca.com/news/more-com...5b9b6b9ab.html

Also from the Ithaca Times is an article about future meetings with all parties concerned about plans for the downtown area during the next decade:

https://www.ithaca.com/news/ithaca/d...c85daaa3c.html

From the Ithaca Voice a more in-depth description of the breakdown of the state grant proposal, including an update on other projects for downtown:

https://ithacavoice.com/2019/07/in-s...neration-city/

Next up from the Voice is a new housing proposal for the Collegetown neighborhood:

https://ithacavoice.com/2019/07/visu...n-collegetown/

An expansion of childcare facilities in Ithaca area:

https://ithacavoice.com/2019/07/itha...ith-expansion/

Interesting info the city got special state ok to spend local money on affordable housing:

https://ithacavoice.com/2019/07/tomp...dable-housing/

With a limited amount of land available, less than six square miles, the city is looking at ways to get denser population wise. One way is to grow up which has been underway and hopefully will continue. The other is through infill housing. There's disagreement on that as noted n the Ithaca Times article:

https://www.ithaca.com/news/new-infi...87e26244e.html

Here are a couple of pics I took of the new infill nearing the end of construction (2015) mentioned in the article:

That's not to say infill isn't happening. Here are a couple of recent projects noted in the Ithacating blog:

https://ithacating.com/2019/07/18/81...update-7-2019/

https://ithacating.com/2019/07/12/12...update-7-2019/

Hopefully the city will help get more housing and taxpayers, especially since so much of the land in the city is tax exempt.

There's a lot of controversy about any proposal for a conference center in the heart of downtown. With the possibility of big rewards, and also a great deal of risk, the city considers developing one of the bigger facilities in Upstate New York. From the Ithaca Voice:

https://ithacavoice.com/2019/07/plan...-bigger-risks/

Developments in the Collegetown neighborhood have slowed down, especially since Cornell plans to go forward with more residential building on campus (roughly 2,000 beds). But there are a couple under construction.

From the Ithacating blog;

A nearly complete 238 Linden Avenue. Hard to believe there are 24 units in there.

https://ithacating.com/2019/08/06/23...update-5-2019/

The other one well underway is 67 unit 119 - 125 College Avenue (College Townhouses)

https://ithacating.com/2019/08/06/11...update-8-2019/

There is some recent proposed activity in the area, articles from the Ithaca Voice.

Cornell's seeking OK from the Town Of Ithaca for two projects:

https://ithacavoice.com/2019/09/corn...emic-building/

About 4 blocks and a gorge away in my old neighborhood of Collegetown a proposal which could cause an uproar since it involves the current location of Collegetown Bagels:

https://ithacavoice.com/2019/08/plan...egetown-block/

Looks like a major downtown proposal has taken another step forward. Article from the Ithaca Times:

https://www.ithaca.com/news/ithaca/c...a1b209112.html
