I live just a few blocks away from this project. It is a facedectomy of an older 19th-century brick structure, and the finishes are precast. Very nice precast. But precast nonetheless.

Underneath, there is a handsome Victorian or Edwardian-era brick & limestone townhouse.

Facedectomies like this are all over Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood.

Spanish architect Martos wins Driehaus Prize; Yale's Scully honored with Henry Hope Reed Award

The 2010 winner of the Richard H. Driehaus Prize for Clasical Architecture is Spanish architect Rafael Manzano Martos, while the winner of the Henry Hope Reed Award, which recognizes non-architects who make significant contributions to traditional architecture, is Yale's legendary architectural historian Vincent Scully.

The University of Notre Dame School of Architecture, which administers the awards, made the announcement Thursday. The $200,000 Driehaus Prize, presented annually to a distinguished classical architect, is worth $200,000. The Reed Award comes with a grant of $50,000. The honors wil be formally made in Chicago on March 27.

Martos, born in 1936, is recognized for his expert use of the Mudejar style, which blends Muslim and Christian influences. He portfolio includes hotels and other commercial buildings, along with residential complexes in Spain and the Middle East--one apparently connected with the singer Julio Iglesias. He has also done significant resotoration work, including a palace that is part of a complex where Christopher Columbus is said to have met with King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella.

Scully is Yale's Sterling Professor Emeritus in the History of Art, a hugely influential figure who has shaped the thinking of generations of Yale students and the architectural profession as a whole. He has long been a champion of historic preservation, as well as the vernacular and classical styles of architecture, and he is, as well, a brilliant, entertaining lecturer. (Full disclosure: I was fortunate enough to study with him in the 1980s.) His former students include at least one other Driehaus juror, New Yorker architecture critic Paul Goldberger.

Chicago philanthropoist and businessman Richard Driehaus is the sponsor of the Driehaus awards.

that award is basically the pritzker for traditional architecture. the usual suspects krier, porphyrios, and quinlan terry were past winners. check out the site, there are some good examples:

Huh?

The Driehaus Prize is an award for new buildings that are built in a traditional architectural style. Which is also the topic of this thread. Which is why I posted the article here.

@Hed Kandi: Thanks for your Jakriborg pics, I totally forgot about it. I wouldn't expect to see it here.

An interesting thing is that you're not following your rules either...

for example the New Grand Mosque - Manama, Bahrain and the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque - Oman are historistic buildings as they combine modern with historic elements. Further the Castle Kataryna - Schweitzer, USA is just a typical disney interpretation of european castle architecture. The buildings at Neumarkt in Dresden, Germany are facade reconstruktions build with modern materials, another example are these new hindusitic temple buildings. do you really think that not one of them is purely out of concrete instead of handcarved stone ?

^The stone on those two weathered beautifully, but the windows on the second building look totally out-of-place.

Not sure how traditional this is in a Swedish context but anyhow:

Anyone got pictures of Dragon Gate, A former modernist motel, right in the middle of nowhere along the E4 highway. Maybe ten miles north of Stockholm. It got rebuilded to look like a Chinese fortress during the 00s.

I stumbled across these today...

http://www.antika-plus.ru/pics/lists/other/baku2.jpg

Those two are the nicest-and most historically accurate-ones on the site, some of the others would look out of place in 90s Las Vegas.
