^ Ha, that's the only thing that would have been worse. Luckily there was enough common sense not to do that.

The Internet Is Loving The Bombers & Als Punt-Off
Max Rosenberg thesnap.ca August 26/2017

Tie Game. Final Play…. Only needing a single to win…. The Bombers & Als gave us this glorious series of events.

To a CFL fan, it’s just one of those amazing things that makes the CFL what it is.

For those not familiar with the CFL, it’s just one of those amazing things that makes them think…

What in the world is going on.
This is incredible, why can’t it happen more often.
This is better than a fair catch.

To explain:

Trying to break a tie, the Alouettes and Bombers get involved in a back and forth kick out where the Alouettes are trying to register a single point rouge by either pinning the Bombers in their endzone or having it go out the side or back of the endzone. Trying to prevent that (and maybe score themselves), the Bombers kick it back to the Als in hopes that one of their onside players can run, recover the punt and return it for point to win the game. Madness ensues with no actual points scored but as Rod Black says, it definitely one of the finer moments of CFL football rules coming to life.

After it happened, football Twitter got a hold of it, including Pat McAfee of Barstool Sports who is a former NFL punter and was LOVING it.

If you’re bored, just go take a look through those thread and check out everyone trying to figure out what is happening. It’s pure gold.

Especially this one with over 3,000 RTs!

Tides turning in Ottawa following win over BC
cfl.ca staff August 26 2017

OTTAWA — It wasn’t an easy start to the season for last year’s Grey Cup champs.

After tying their Week 1 contest against the Calgary Stampeders, the Ottawa REDBLACKS dropped their next three games. Their first win didn’t come until Week 5 versus the Montreal Alouettes.

Ottawa has now won two straight and sit second in the East. They are only one game behind the division leading Toronto Argonauts for the top spot after Saturday’s 31-24 win over the BC Lions.

The winds of change can be felt in the REDBLACKS locker room.

“When we were going through all that losing, the thing I just wanted to keep in sight with the guys is that there was so much to play for because two teams in the East are hosting playoff games,” Ottawa head coach Rick Campbell said after Saturday’s win. “It’s going to be a dogfight the rest of the way with the all of the teams in the east but the key is to keep working at it and get the tide turned and win some games and go from there.”

Ottawa’s 3-6-1 record this season does not tell the full story. The REDBLACKS have not lost a game by more than one score. Their largest losing margin was only seven points. Ottawa’s other five losses were by four points or less.

“Our guys have been working hard,” said Campbell. “I have no complaints this year of our work ethic or want to. Every win you get is a confidence builder and hopefully we can just keep building on it.”

The REDBLACKS hard work appears to paying off at the midway point of the season. They have averaged 34 points for and only 21 points against during their two win stint.

Up next for the REDBLACKS are three crucial games against divisional opponents. Two of those matchups will see the REDBLACKS go toe-to-toe with the Als while the other will be against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

“This four game set; this game today, and then going to Montreal two times and then playing Hamilton here, those four games are going to go a long way to determine how the rest of the season finishes out,” said Campbell “We’re 1-0 as far as that little four game set and it’s going to be a tough game in Montreal but I know our guys are going to be ready to go.”

An important stat for receivers: yac (yards after catch) has Harris, Sinopoli and Coombs: 1,2,3

And finally the QB Efficiency leaders of the CFL are 1 and 2: Brandon Bridge and Andrew Buckley.

Ok, so that last one is a bogus measure, but it is true

Makes you wonder what would happen though if Buckley could ever get a shot, because he looks like one of the old timers out there for calmly distributing the ball.
Update

Andrew Harris is now leading the league in rushing yards, Jerome Messam is second but still leads in rushing TDs.

Brad Sinopoli is still leading the league in receptions and still third in yards. Andrew Harris is still fourth in receptions and dropping to eighth is the injured Anthony Coombs who may only return at the end of the season.

An important stat for receivers: yac (yards after catch) has Harris, Sinopoli and Coombs: 1,2, and 5

As an aside, in completions, Andrew Buckley is ahead of James Franklin, Dan Lefevour, Drew Willy, and Vernon Adams.

I was there. Absolutely beautiful day for football.

The RedBlacks are still not fully past their habit of trying to self destruct in the 4th quarter. The fans left a little shell shocked and were not pleased how the end of the game went except for the final interception. They were ready to boo the team off the field if the Lions had tied the game in the dying seconds.

In my opinion, the RedBlacks should be a contender by the end of the season. Their record is not an real indication of their play if they can start finishing off games better, which may be starting to happen.

I'm not one for "witch hunts" of this type without proper evidence. We all saw what happened at Duke with their lacrosse program. I don't see this as any different than a boss having any responsibility over what his employees do on their own time.

Lots of guilt to go around in this one, it seems,

The university says that a female student-athlete told her head coach in 2013 that she had been sexually assaulted by five football players a year earlier, providing the names of the players involved. That head coach then shared the assault allegations with Briles, McCaw and the sports administrator for the female athlete’s team.

Just watched a story on this on TSN from ESPN. I surely hope that the increasing politicization of ESPN (some are now calling it MSESPN) doesn't make its way across the border in a significant way.

Willes' Musings: More than season at stake for slumping Lions
Ed Willes theprovince August 28, 2017

In honour of the Mayweather-McGregor fight, here’s something else that won’t be as bad as you’d think: the Monday-morning musings and meditations on the world of sports:

• There is suddenly much at stake for the B.C. Lions.

Following their loss in Ottawa on Saturday, the Lions find themselves in a dogfight for fourth place in the West and what figures to be the crossover berth in the playoffs. They’re 5-5 and in the throes of a three-game losing streak. Saskatchewan is 4-4 and coming off two straight wins. The Leos had more ambitious designs on this season, but making the CFL playoffs — which isn’t exactly the most-arduous task — has now become their sole focus.

Still, there’s so much else in play for the Leos in 2017 and when you take out the wide-angle lens, you begin to understand this is a pivotal moment in the history of the franchise.

The franchise, in case you’ve forgotten, is for sale and the sense is the new owners will be announced at the end of this season. Who those new owners will be is the next question but, in talking with sources close to the talks, it appears to be down to two buyers: the Aquilinis and a consortium we’ll call The Waterboys because of their ties to the Lions’ support group.

Both parties would seem to satisfy the criteria set down by Lions owner David Braley. They’re local. They have a background in sports. True, The Waterboys have been closer to the Lions over the years, but the Aquilinis, through the Canucks, have resources at their disposal that could strengthen the Lions on and off the field.

But whoever ends up with the team, change is needed. Under the absentee ownership of Braley, the Lions have a tired, shopworn feel to them that has affected their brand. They need new leadership. They need a new vision for the franchise. They need fresh energy.

...

Ed Willes: Wi-Fi, craft beer bolster Redblacks' great connection with fans
Ed Willes theprovince August 25, 2017

OTTAWA — In the startup phase of repatriating the Canadian Football League to Ottawa, the owners of the Redblacks — who were all born before The Beatles appeared on Ed Sullivan — fell into a disagreement over the Wi-Fi capabilities of their new stadium.

The initial feeling among the group was they had higher priorities — signing players and coaches for example — than providing top-notch phone service for fans. But as they talked through the issue, they began to understand they weren’t selling their team to their generation.

They were selling to a generation for whom the phone is like a limb.

“We didn’t do it for the 55-and-over crowd,” said Jeff Hunt, the frontman for that group that brought the CFL back to the nation’s capital.

“It was specifically geared to the millennials. It’s what these young fans do. This is their world. You can’t expect to access young fans without letting them use their devices.”

Hunt was asked how much his group ultimately spent on its enhanced Wi-Fi service.

“I can’t remember exactly, but it was a lot more than we originally budgeted,” he said. “It was like four or five million.”

Oh.

The Redblacks, who host the B.C. Lions on Saturday afternoon at Wi-Fi-friendly TD Place Stadium, have written an extraordinary success story on the field in their short, sweet life. Three-plus years removed from expansion, they won a memorable Grey Cup showdown with Calgary last year after coming up just short against Edmonton the year before.

This year, they’ve fallen to 2-6-1 with the six losses coming by a combined 20 points, but as they’ve demonstrated amply during their time in the league, all they need is a playoff berth in the watered-down East and they are a dangerous opponent for anyone in the post-season.

But the Redblacks’ larger success story is its connection with their fans, specially those bearded, craft-beer swilling hipsters who seem to have tuned out the CFL in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal — which just happen to be the league’s biggest markets.

There are any number of reasons for this — the popularity of Major League Soccer in the afore-mentioned cities, the NFL, the greying of the fan base in all sports — but the simple fact is Ottawa has succeeded where others have failed.

So why has the CFL finally taken in Ottawa after so many fiascos?

As it turns out, the answer to that question is a little more involved than reliable Wi-Fi service, and it starts — as it usually does in professional sports — with ownership.

Hunt and his group — Bill Shenkman, John Ruddy and Roger Greenberg — represent some of Ottawa’s deepest pockets and Shenkman, Ruddy and Greenberg are all real-estate developers. They’re also Ottawa guys who were willing to endure the arduous public process of resurrecting the Lansdowne area and building a new stadium.

Because this is Canada, you must know this was more painful than root canal with a small but persistent group called Friends of Lansdowne challenging the Hunt group every step of the way. The Ontario Court of Appeal threw out their last challenge in 2012, four years after Hunt and friends had been awarded a CFL franchise.

“That emboldened us,” Hunt said. “We weren’t going to let this small group stop something this important. It built our resolve to make this thing go.”

What resulted is the new Lansdowne Park, the name given to the area around the stadium that includes 250 residential units in twin apartment towers, 33,000 square metres of retail space and the Aberdeen Pavilion, the heritage building that has been the centre of the grounds for 120 years. After the Renegades folded in 2008, the area was a virtual ghost town.

Now, “I think it’s completely rejuvenated the area,” said Hunt. “It was a wasteland of asphalt and decaying buildings. It’s been transformed.”

Predictability, there has been the grumbling about the cost of the project and questions about its long-term viability. But the Redblacks have also emerged as the anchor tenant to the new Lansdowne, and what they’ve built speaks to the city’s 20- and 30-somethings.

The atmosphere at too many CFL games can be stale. In Ottawa, where the Redblacks sell out their 24,000-seat home, it’s like an ongoing kegger, and we mean the good kind, not the kind where the cops break up the party at two in the morning after some fights.

The concourses are wide-open and migration is encouraged among the fandom. Redblacks’ merch can be seen everywhere, including the fabled plaid lumberjack shirt made famous by lovable hosers Bob and Doug McKenzie.

The south grandstand, which was falling apart while the Renegades were in business in the mid-aughts, is now all shiny and new. The Grey Cup is coming this year. The Senators are meeting the Canadiens in an outdoor NHL game in December.

“The whole area has been reinvented,” said Hunt.

“It was cool to be part of something new and building from the ground up,” said Redblacks’ receiver Brad Sinopoli, a former star quarterback at the University of Ottawa.

“Everyone feels a part of something now and we feel that connection with them. It’s been awesome.”

The great Wi-Fi reception? That’s part of it.

I have to admit I was unacquainted with the Baylor sexual assault story so Art Briles' name meant nothing to me, but I can tell you my twitter feed has blown up with angry, mostly female football fans expressing outrage over this hire. If that is any indication of popular sentiment, I would expect the league to intervene... this hiring could end up undoing all of the goodwill generated by the "Diversity Is Strength" campaign.

The Ticats sure are turning into a tire fire... as if being 0-8 wasn't bad enough, they go and throw this into the mix?

Former Baylor head football coach Art Briles and former athletic director Ian McCaw knew about an alleged group sexual assault and chose not to report it, according to a statement issued yesterday by the university. This confirmation also indicates that the assistant coaches who spoke out last week in defense of Briles weren’t being truthful about his role in the scandal.
