Probably the funniest for me was while I was picking up a weekend dinner at Summerhill Market a few winters ago. I turned a corner and almost bashed shopping carts with a tall man with extra shaggy big hair. Perhaps he was just coming from the gym, but he was wearing an extra-long coat that showed that he was wearing shorts underneath with socks pulled all the way up. An odd outfit given that it was not warm out.

I fetched my son from a different part of the store and told him to check out the man to see if he recognized him. While he was too young to be interested in business, he was starting to get into the NHL, so I thought he might recognize him that way. He came back and said that he did not know who he was. He was stunned when I told him that the man was David Thomson, the richest man in Canada and co-owner of the Winnipeg Jets. My son refused to believe me and said, "He looks like a hobo!" He finally believed me when I pointed out the Jets logo on his jacket. Plus, hobos rarely buy cartloads of meat at Summerhill Market prices.

^ Thomson may be mega-rich, but he keeps it real. The fact that he is worth like 32 billion dollars but has still been known to fly Air Canada economy tells you something.

There are Saudi princes with a fraction of his wealth who probably don't leave home unless it's on the gold plated everything private jet.

They use gold-plated toilet paper, for wiping the remains of their gold-plated turds. As a side note, I heard that Trump has a golden toilet, but evidently he never uses it because he is always so full of shit. Apparently, Melania doesn't ever take a shit or fart. Or urinate. Hence the need for those Russian prostitutes.

My impression of Ottawa in the 90s, in a single photo:

Back in the Cowpland's heyday as the ''in'' couple in Ottawa, my wife and I were having dinner one night with friends in the Byward Market when Mrs. Acajack decided to go to the ladies' room.

A few seconds later, Marlen Cowpland (who we had not seen before then) walked by our table and headed to the same ladies' room.

I told my friends, you just watch... Mrs. Acajack and Marlen are going to come out of the bathroom as if they were BFFs.

Well of course as predicted, some minutes later Mrs. Acajack and Mrs. Cowpland emerged from there giggling and talking loudly in French (Marlene I believe is actually a Marlène and originally from Chicoutimi or something...), and grabbing each other by the arm, before seeing each other off with the requisite kiss on both cheeks.

The only thing missing was them saying "later daaaaaahling" to each other.

They've kept a low(er) profile for a number of years. I believe he is still involved in tech. Did a Google News search and his name was on a news release last year where he's named as the CEO of a company called ZIM.

ahh, the Cowplands. One of Canada's true power couples of the early 90s. Their mansion has 'his and hers' squash courts. I seem to remember that Marlen used to go for walks with her pet Jaguar (the leash was studded with diamonds).
Corel. Remember Corel-draw? Word Perfect?

I saw the Cowplands at some Ritzy restaurant in Montreal once. I believe it was le Piment Rouge, at the Windsor Hotel (Le Windsor). Marlen looked a bit like a retired porn star. She could have been Jenna Jameson or Silvia Saint. She also reminded me of Mila Mulroney (not because of her looks, but her yearning for luxury).

Their renown was mostly limited to the Ottawa area. I doubt they were household names to most people in the GTA, for example.

Of course, there are Canadians from other regions who are very keen on goings-on across the country (esquire seems to be like this) will have heard of them too.

My daughter worked there part time during university (Glendon) and found most of the customers to be entitled annoying people. The prices there are crazy.

She had one of the Real Housewives of Toronto and Kathleen Wynne as a customer. She told all of her co-workers 'it's a good thing my dad wasn't here...he can't stand her (Wynne)'.

Well they were familiar enough from umpteen Report on Business Magazine cover stories over the years (or that kind of thing, anyway).

A shared love of luxury, perhaps, but one was dedicated to the pursuit of “U”’ while the other wouldn’t have known “U” if it smacked her in the face.

I was apparently talking to a mega famous Brit while working as a host in a trendy London restaurant. His 'handlers' kept telling me I was standing too close to him to the embarrassment of the guy. I had to tell him I had no idea who he was which seemed to please him immensely. We had a bit of a giggle over it. I still don't know who he was but found out he's a famous English soccer player.

Another incident drew the attention of the restaurant manager. She said an actress from Coronation Street kept trying to talk to me but I kept ignoring her. I told the manager I thought she was a prostitute.
