Every city has them and we're just witnessing the escalation of stupidity with humankind in general across all cities.

Although I never tire of Vancouver riot jokes for some reason.

Curse you Columbus for losing last night.

Exactly. A few troublemakers in a crowd of 20,000 can cause a riot anywhere in the world.

However, there's a whole world of difference between "can" and "does".

This.

Unless the G20 riots were also caused by obsessive fans...of the G20.

(or maybe the extreme drought of the Marble Loafs?)

There will be no riot after round 1 this time.

Recipies for a riot: Underdog beats a better team. Not the case here.

Long exciting series with a crazy ending: 2010 Montreal vs Pitts.

Poor preparation by the police: They're ready this time.

Now if we get to the 3rd round or the finals you can bet your house on something happening.

"Original Six" is basically irrelevant and the only reason people even care about it is the 60+ year old broadcasters on CBC who incessantly talk about "the good old days".
Irrelevant? Not really... they're generally the teams that perform the best for the league on a marketing/value standpoint, i.e. on the following metrics: most fans, highest franchise values, biggest crowds drawn, most Stanley Cups won, largest players payroll, best team name recognition for marketing purposes, etc.

You can dismiss the fact that the Yankees and Red Sox are >100 years old while, say, the Kansas City Royals aren't, as an "irrelevant" fact by itself, sure, but you can't deny that the former two are among the very top baseball teams by a number of metrics -- it's not JUST their age.

So, yes, "big" teams like the Leafs and Wings helped boost the Western Conference's average metrics. And also helped the chances of having more "big" teams in the playoffs...

Also, I feel the need to point out the irony here: it was the Eastern teams (and their fanbases) who most strongly lobbied for the current conference and division alignments. People whined too much about watching hockey games that started at 9pm, and hence we have timezone-based alignments. Detroit spent literally decades trying to "move East", and the other "Original Six" teams lobbied heavily for this as well, to have them as a regular season opponent. Basically, it's entirely the fault of fans and ownership in the "Original Six" markets; they got what they wanted.
... Does make perfect sense from their point of view. They want to have as many of the "best" teams (as defined above) as the most regular opponents possible. (Exact same way the investors behind the NY Yankees would certainly much rather have their team face the Boston Red Sox all the time than have their team face the Kansas City Royals all the time... from a strictly financial perspective...)

Makes the playoffs less interesting, from my POV, but it does make financial sense for the Eastern team owners.

Hell of game and hell of a series. I wonder what the atmosphere's like in Montreal right now.

Do you think the wait will help or hurt the Habs? Will it give them some much needed rest and practice or will it break their focus?

About time Pacioretty scored!!! Add another game winner for him.

It's our first sweep since 1993. Maybe a sign lol?

Just for fun guys...

René Bourque scored the first goal in game three in Montreal and insisted singer Ginette Reno come back for game four.

After Ginette sang last night she shook hands with Daniel Brière, and guess who scored the first goal?

There are some great positives about the long break:

- they can start elaborating the game plan for Bruins/Wings; while those teams can't afford to think of the Canadiens right now

- healing injuries

- stocking up on energy

- practicing the damn power play! Especially in the first 4-5 days while we don't know the opposing team.

On the negative side, they sure could have rink-rust at the beginning...

Let's hope for a long seven game series with lots of overtime for the Bruins and Wings

I guess Don Cherry has rubbed off on him a bit after all these years!

I was not aware of this until now as I watched the game coverage on RDS.

There are two videos on here: one is the original quote and one is the subsequent backpedalling.
