Agreed, do like the GCTC on Wellington West. It would be nice to see a nice slick and slim 30 storey condo tower on King Eds.

At least something different from the Claridge Plazas.

All glass please. Something like Ice blue, not the over used deep sea blue like Minto Place, Constitution Square, Centennial Tower, Performance Court...

Maybe, although I'd like to see something working with a similar look to the original design. It makes me think of this building in the Bowery, although it would be better to have something less minimalist. Also, by "ice blue" do you mean something like Shangri-la in Toronto? I'd love to see something like Bay-Adelaide Centre's light blue, transparent glass.

That would also make a cool impact. Another option would be a podium along the same lines as the original design with a more traditional-modern tower on top.

Construction underway on Nouvelle Scène building

Michael Woods More from Michael Woods
Published on: August 26, 2014Last Updated: August 26, 2014 7:52 PM EDT

Nearly 18 months after La Nouvelle Scène’s old building was torn down, construction has finally begun on a replacement for the theatre building.

Construction at the site on King Edward Avenue just north of Rideau Street started last week and the building’s on track to open in September 2015, executive director Suzanne Matte told a news conference Tuesday.

La Nouvelle Scène is a joint project of four francophone drama companies, founded in 1999. Its old building, featuring a 152-seat theatre, dated back to the 1930s and was plagued with ventilation and structural problems.

The provincial and federal governments first committed $2.7 million each in mid-2011 toward a new building. In March 2013, La Nouvelle Scène tore down its old building.

Only afterward, in November, did the city add a $1-million contribution, along with waiving $450,000 in development charges.

The fenced-off site remained empty this year as La Nouvelle Scène’s staff dealt with delays such as the discovery of contaminated water and soil (the site used to be a garage). Staff told the Citizen in April that construction would start in the summer.

“Today is nice, because we know that it’s real,” said Ontario Attorney General Madeleine Meilleur, the minister responsible for francophone affairs. “The construction has already started. We are seeing the design now … We will see the rebirth of La Nouvelle Scène.”

La Nouvelle Scène fundraised another $2.5 million toward the project, which they say will be a hub of the city’s francophone artistic community.

Staff at La Nouvelle Scène made the announcement about construction at a news conference Tuesday at the Courtyard Restaurant in the ByWard Market.

“La Nouvelle Scène represents the entrepreneurial and artistic spirit of francophones who have contributed to forging Ottawa’s cultural identity,” said Albert Gabbay, chair of the board of directors.

Construction on the 23,000-square-foot building, designed by Montreal architects Saucier and Perrotte, will take about 13 months. It will be nearly twice the size of La Nouvelle Scène’s old home.

It will feature a 180-seat theatre, an 80-seat theatre and a multi-purpose studio. There will also be an expansive welcome area and an interior garden.

Applications filed with the city last year originally called for replacing the existing theatre with a three-storey building nearly three times the size. However, those initial plans were revised to a two-storey building, with a hope to add a third storey in a later construction phase.

Warlyn Construction was hired in early August. La Nouvelle Scène got necessary permits, such as for excavation and drainage, on Aug. 20 and construction started the next day.

The four theatre groups have been using nearby De La Salle High School since their old theatre space was torn down.

Exciting stuff! This is exactly the kind of development we need along King Edward. That part of town seriously needs a face lift. Can't wait to see more renders and the finished product!

Here's progress from a few days ago. I couldn't tell if there was continuing work on this building or if construction was paused yet again.

LNS is mostly finished. They will be doing an unofficial launch this Friday (it started its "Saison Clandestine" last week with Pigeons Affamés‬) but the official opening is set for the end of May. The building is essentially finished with some detailing work to be completed. I think the bar will be a fun place for drinks. April looks pretty cool with some concerts and a mini African film festival.

Bravo, c'est une belle réussite et va permettre aux artistes d'Ottawa de nouer des liens plus étroits avec les créateurs montréalais.

I haven't managed to get down to King Edward in some time. This project must be done by now.

Ford government withdraws La Nouvelle Scène's $2.9-million grant

Peter Hum, Ottawa Citizen
Updated: November 21, 2018

Ottawa-Vanier MPP Nathalie Des Rosiers, who championed a $2.9-million provincial grant to keep a debt-strapped French-language theatre in Lowertown alive, said Wednesday that she will fight to offset the critical damage of that grant suddenly being withdrawn by the Ford government.

Des Rosiers said she learned on Wednesday through media reports that the grant, which she announced in May, had been rescinded. Now, the possibility of La Nouvelle Scène Gilles Desjardins closing is “certainly a risk that is out there,” Des Rosiers said in an interview.

The withdrawal of the grant comes on the heels of provincial cuts announced last week that abolish a proposed Franco-Ontarian university project as well as the position of Ontario’s French-language commissioner.

In that context, the loss of the grant for La Nouvelle Scène “is again another mistake,” Des Rosiers told reporters in Toronto on Wednesday. “The government doesn’t understand the French reality in Ontario.”

Awarded this spring by the outgoing Liberal government, the grant was to have assisted La Nouvelle Scène with its programming and with reducing its $3 million debt incurred during its recent reconstruction.

Prior to receiving the grant, the theatre’s debt “was so large that they were unable to meet their obligations in a way that was threatening their very existence,” Des Rosiers said in an interview. She said “it made no sense” to allow La Nouvelle Scène to close, given previous provincial investments.

Des Rosiers said she would reach out to Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport Michael Tibollo to see what could be done to mitigate the new blow to La Nouvelle Scène.

La Nouvelle Scène is very open to working with any government to continue its mission, Des Rosiers said. The theatre could also boost its own fund-raising efforts to address its financial situation, she said.

The 23,000-square-foot facility on King Edward Avenue serves four francophone drama companies and is home to two theatres seating 180 and 80 people respectively.

Also on Wednesday, Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson wrote Caroline Mulroney, Ontario’s attorney general and minister responsible for Francophone affairs, to protest the abolition of the French-language commissioner’s position.

“The abolition is a big disappointment for us and a step back for Franco-Ontarians,” Watson wrote in French, noting that more than 145,000 Ottawa residents — or more than 15 per cent of the the city’s population — are francophones.

Why stop there? Why not sell all the French public schools and community centers? To Doug Ford, Francophones are just another annoying voter group that he would like to pretend doesn't exist.

I wonder how the voters in Glengarry-Prescott-Russell and Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry, which have some of the highest concentrations of francophones in the province, feel after having voted clearly for the Ford government.
