Interesting, thanks for the link.

London had a bit of a peak a few years ago at 9 murders and 8 in 2012 but it has dropped substantially to more historic norms. London had just 2 murders in 2013 and only 1 so far this year and attempted murder and sexual assaults are also down.

I believe Toronto is up to 44 now. It's been crazy here the past 5 weeks. Three more dead today in separate shootings. It seems almost everyday recently there's been some altercation.

Here's a chart of the big 6 + Winnipeg. Ottawa/Gatineau is split in this data set. Trendline is 5-year moving average.

edit: rearranged legend by homicide rate, fix axis scale

Interesting that Edmonton is the only of the Big Six that had a murder rate above the national average.

I'm surprised Vancouver is higher than Montreal because of how much we hear about the mafia there, though I suppose our gang culture isn't exactly weak either.

Good for Ottawa for having such a low rate. It really fits the quiet, family city image it has.

Also interesting is that Winnipeg seems to be trending in the opposite direction than the rest of Canada.

There was a fatal shooting yesterday, too, so Toronto is at 45 now.

If you are not a gang member, and not involved with illicit drugs, your risk of being a homicide victim in Toronto is minuscule. I think the same would be true of Vancouver.

Based on that graph from 2012 the numbers are trending down in most cities. but crime in general is trending down. If you go by this year Calgary and Edmonton may have the same ratio.

But every city has an anomalis year and it seems that this year it is Calgary. Best way to avoid being a statistic is to avoid a high risk life style and or don't piss off your spouse.

I know this is not PC, but it would be interesting to see what the method of murder was in each city based on the social situation and economics. Just looking at some resent ones here. Stabbings are the most common usually in the inner city. where shootings are more common to Drugs and gangs and are generally in the suburbs.
Just the last one here could be interesting to find out why it happened.

Winnipeg's average is well below the last figures according to the 2012 (diagram) report.

Currently at 19 i believe with 2.5 months left in the year. A very good sign.

Their will be many cities surpassing us this year in this unfortunate statistic.

In Montreal it's mostly the the public purse that gets murdered by the mafia. In Vancouver the scene seems a bit 'younger' i.e. gangs are still in the warring-over-territory phase of their co-existence.

I only recall 2 brazen 'public' shootings in Montreal over the past few years - the successful offing of Nick Rizz jr & failed attempt on Joseph Ducarme (who finally bit the dust this year). These two gentlemen were among the top 5 most influential mobsters in Montreal.

So all things considered, its pretty 'quiet' here for such an active mob scene. I get the impression Van has way more firebombings, daylight shootings, club shootings, etc (let alone per capita) than Montreal but I may be mistaken.

I wouldn't be surprised. Our biggest gangs are much more "street" than I imagine Montreal's to be. You do hear about things like drive-by's and stabbings more often than you'd like here. Being right on the border and having so much pot to export there's a lot of potential money for gangs here, so you end up with tons of clueless teenagers trying to cash in and not really knowing what they're up against.

The media frenzy surrounding this case is getting ridiculous. From the story about the defense attorney making out with the murder suspect before he was arrested, to live coverage on TV, radio, and online.

Yes. The media is leaving that one well enough alone at the request of the family - but they did say that the kid is home, recovering perfectly well, now everyone shut up.

Does that include the four year old who's parents have been charged with murder?

Toronto and Montreal homicides from 1987-2013. Numbers are a little hard to pick out, but there it is.
